If there was one person on board the TARDIS who could get answers from him, it was Rose. Ignoring his headache for the moment, he looked up. He might have mustered a smile or conjured an excuse, but he knew she would see both for the lies that they were. Instead, he gave her honesty.
"Oh, Rose," he said, quietly, his usual energy nowhere to be found. The light from the doorway hurt, but he forced himself not to squint or shield his eyes. "They were all gone. They were all supposed to be gone."
