Doody was trying really, really hard not to look too much at Danny, who was sitting across from him in his boxers. Or think too much about Danny in his boxers. He needed to get them out of the room, because then Danny would put on pants.
He leaned forward. “Wanna… do something?”
--
Danny looked up at him and shrugged. “I guess we could. Got anything in mind?”
--
He shrugged. “I ...haven’t been to see the other guys lately, or like, practiced much. We could go spend time with them? Or … you know, something else if you don’t want to.”
--
Danny got to his feet. “Yeah, we can do that,” he said, He stretched a little and then walked into his room to pull on some pants and a black t-shirt. He came back out after a few minutes. “Okay ready?”
--
Doody was going to die. He was stretching, and all … god, hot. He found Danny hot.
As Danny walked into the room he glanced down at the front of his jeans. Did he have time to go into his room and … no. No he absolutely couldn’t beat off thinking about Danny. On purpose.
So he took a deep breath and got to his feet, heading to his room to grab his guitar.
--
Danny had fixed his hair and was combing it as he waited for Doody to come back out. Things were better between them now but still kinda awkward. Especially since Danny had admitted to himself that he was into guys and well…. Doody was a guy and a pretty hot one at that. But Danny just tried to act as he normally did.
--
Doody smiled. “Ready to go?” He asked, nodding to the door as he settled the guitar case in his arms. He started walking, trying to stay cool. Danny putting on pants wasn’t really helping when it was those pants.
--
Danny nodded and headed for the door too. “You gonna play something while you’re there?”
--
Doody shrugged. “Maybe,” he said as they walked. “It’s kinda fun. And I’m … I think I’m getting kinda okay.” He glanced to the side nervously. None of the guys at home wanted him to play, ever.
--
Danny glanced over at him. “I’m sure you’re like… pretty good or whatever.”
--
Doody blinked. Wow. He hadn’t been expecting that.
He smiled a little nervously. “Don’t say that until you hear me.”
They reached the door so he knocked on it, setting his guitar case down.
Tracy opened the door a second later. “Hey! Oh, hi, Danny. Come in.” She stepped back.
--
Dannygave one quick wave with his hand. “Hey,” he said.
Link smiled at them. “Hey Doody, good to see you again. Danny, nice to see you again, too.”
--
Doody headed in and set down his guitar. “Beatles,” he said, smiling as he registered what was playing. “Cool. They’re a band from the future. Not like, crazy far. But they’re pretty cool.”
Tracy nodded. “They’re so cool. Do you like music, Danny?”
--
Danny nodded his head. “Yeah, I guess some music is alright. We’ve had dances and stuff in school which were pretty cool.”
--
Tracy’s eyes lit up. “Yeah, we love to dance! You want something to eat? We have like, chips and sodas over there.”
Doody was starting to relax, it seemed like Danny was going to be okay here.”
--
Danny shook his head. “Nah, I’m good.”
Link smiled at Doody. “So, do you want to play something?” He asked. Doody usually liked to get straight to the music and they had been working on some songs together.
--
Doody glanced at Danny, a little nervous. “Sure. Okay. Um - might … start off with Those Magic Changes, I haven’t played much the last couple days and I’m feeling rusty. You can sing too, if you want? Then we can work on the other stuff.”
Tracy moved over to turn off the music as Doody got his guitar out.
--
Link smiled and sat on the couch, waiting for Doody to start.
Danny stood where he was watching….. Well mostly Doody but he tried bot to make it seem obvious. Like h was interested in hearing him play. That was all….
--
Doody took a deep breath before he started to play, forcing himself to try to forget that Danny was here and just sing.
“What’s that playing on the radio? Why do I start swaying to and fro? I have never heard that song before, but if I don’t hear it any more…” he sung.
--
Danny’s eyes widened a bit when Doody started to sing. Wow. He was really good. He sounded really hot and good.
--
As he got further into the song, he did kind of forget Danny was there, it was just fun to play and sing. He was confident as he played it now, his fingers moving along the frets casually as he strummed.
He smiled as he got through the middle bit, singing again, his voice low. “I'll be waiting by the radio, you'll come back to me someday, I know. Been so lonesome since our last goodbye, but I'm singin' as I cry-ay-ay!”
--
Link smiled. Doody was definitely getting more confident and he was glad because he was very talented.
Danny liked the way Doody really got into it. He was good. Very good. And looked so hot like this. Confident and hot. Danny had to stop himself from shuddering when his voice got all low and he forced himself to think very unsexy thoughts.
--
As the song ended, Doody turned to Link and they sang the last chorus together, and when they were done Doody felt the rush that he always felt. He grinned widely and then suddenly remembered Danny was there and he glanced over, a little nervously.
--
Danny gave him a slight nod. Yes, Doddy was really good and hot but Danny couldn’t exactly say that to him.
--
Doody glanced down. Okay, well, he hadn’t laughed…
Tracy nudged Danny with her elbow. She knew he’d been surprised in a good way when Doody started to sing, but he was clearly acting all ‘cool’ and not showing it. “He’s good, right?” She said pointedly.
--
Danny nodded his head. “Yeah, he’s pretty good,” he said. He felt awkward. He could say a lot more but he didn’t want to like…. Overdo it and somehow give it away he was into guys… and well more specifically, Doody. “You got any more songs you could sing?”
--
Doody flushed. He wished Tracy hadn’t said that, it was like, forcing Danny into saying he’d liked it. Which made him feel… way worse than he thought.
“Yeah, he’s great at Yesterday,” Tracy said.
Doody shook his head. “Nah,” he said. “Um. Link, we could work on She Loves You? Though we’re not - like, we’re still practicing it so it’s not perfect…”
--
Danny moved to take a seat this time.
Link nodded his head and smiled. “Yes, we can do that,” he said.
--
Doody tried to relax again, and started to sing and play with Link.
Tracy sat beside Danny. “He’s really, really good. And he is getting a lot better the more he does stuff like this.”
--
Link started to sing along with Doody.
Danny looked over at Tracy, wondering what her problem was. He had said doody was good.
--
“But like, unless he gets supported by people he won’t think he’s good enough. And he is. He really, really is,” she said.
--
“I said he was good. And I meant it. So what’s the big deal?”
--
Tracy raised an eyebrow. “Just - don’t worry about seeming cool and just … be his friend. That’s all.”
--
Danny shifted on the couch. “Maybe this was a stupid idea,” he said. He shouldn’t have come, really. He didn’t fit in with Doody’s new friends it seemed. It would be better if he just left.
--
Tracy shook her head. “No. I'm sorry it's just - he's really self conscious about it and it takes a lot for us to convince him he is good. I know he's your friend, just like… Be careful because he thinks a lot of you. What you say could make him … Lose the confidence he's gained. That's all.”
--
Danny nodded his head and glanced back at Doody but didn't say anything. He really didn't want to be there anymore. He didn't need a lecture from someone he barely knew on how to be Doody's friend. Okay.... Yeah. Maybe she had a point and he should be more encouraging but like.... Doody was his friend first. And Danny was working through a whole lot of new feelings he had for him. Or maybe they weren't new, he just hadn't noticed them or paid attention to them before. He folded his arms over his chest as he watched them play.
--
Tracy bit her lip. “Sorry. But like. He's much happier now you guys are talking again. He didn't say why you weren't because he didn't want to talk about it at all but it upset him a lot. We could tell.”
--
Danny kept quiet but it did make him think. Was Doody upset because he missed him, or because Danny might think he was into guys and he wasn't. Danny knew he would be disappointed if it was the second one but he could never say that. He wished Tracy would leave him alone. Yes, okay. He was a terrible friend. He got that. But he also had a reputation to maintain that she didn't get.
"We never stopped talking. He decided to hang out here more," he said eventually and rather pointedly. He wanted her to drop it.
--
“Because we brought him here. We found him in the gardens and sure he came back because we were singing and stuff together but it was really obvious he wasn't completely okay. He is now. It's good.”
Doody finished the song and looked up. He was a little nervous about the look on Danny's face.
“Sorry. This is probably boring for you…”
--
Danny didn't like the idea he had upset Doody. He really didn't. And he definitely hadn't meant to. Maybe he should be more encouraging. He could do that and be cool at the same time. He was Danny Zuko after all.
He blinked when Doody spoke. "Nah, man. It's cool. Do your thing. It's sounding pretty cool."
He didn't look at Tracy. He was doing this for his friend, not her.
--
Doody blinked, smiling widely without even thinking about it. “Thanks, man. We’ll go for a drink later. Or look for a car again.”
Tracy smiled. “A car?”
Doody nodded. “Combeferre said the ship might find Danny one to fix up.”
--
Danny was glad Doody seemed happy with what he had said.
"Yeah, that sounds cool. We might find one this time."
--
Tracy smiled. “Cool. Yeah it gave us all of these instruments and stuff. I hope you guys find one.”
Doody smiled. “Yeah. Me too.” He strummed absently on his guitar.
--
Danny really liked Doody's smile. It was just.... Yeah, really nice. He had especially liked when he had smiled at him.
"But you gotta sing another one first," he said.
--
Doody ducked his head slightly, smiling. Having Danny here was still making him nervous, but a good kind of nervous. Like he wanted to show off for him. Which was probably stupid, but…
“Yesterday!” Tracy said.
Doody bit his lip. “Um.” He tilted his head. He didn't really know any other songs well enough right now. So he nodded. “Sure, okay.” It was just a song.
He started to strum the guitar and tried to act calm. “Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away. Now it looks as though they're here to stay. Oh, I believe in yesterday.”
--
Danny watched Doody play and tried not to react but God.... His voice.
Link smiled, glad that Doody was getting more confident.
--
Tracy got to her feet and held out her hand to link. She wanted to dance with him.
Doody plucked at the strings, smiling when it was working, the kind of fancy things he was getting good at.
He was really into it now, strumming and singing confidently. “Why she had to go, I don't know, she wouldn't say. I said something wrong now I long for yesterday-ay-ay.”
--
Link got to his feet too and started to dance with Tracy. Danny stayed where he was, watching Doody. He felt weird thinking about his friend the way he was but he couldn't help it. He was really hot and the way he strummed and plucked the guitar. Shit.
Danny took a deep breath, trying to relax himself and think unsexy thoughts.
--
Doody finished the song, smiling. “That was the best I've ever played it.”
Tracy smiled. “It was great!” She said, spinning around with link.
--
Danny nodded his head. "Yeah. You're.....Like good. Really good."
Link smiled as he spun with Tracy. "Yes, it was so great."
--
Doody beamed, flushing a little. “Thanks, man. These guys have … Helped a lot.”
He set his guitar aside. “That's all I know for now so no more,” he said with a grin.
--
Danny nodded his head. He should feel jealous of Link and Tracy but he did. He was worried Doody might start liking them more than him. And well he wanted Doody to like him. And not just in a platonic way.
--
Doody smiled at Danny. “Wanna grab that drink?” He asked. It had been fun but he felt kinda … Exposed. And he wanted to do more normal stuff with Danny now.
--
"Yeah, good idea," he said. He hoped the others wouldn't tag along but if Doody asked them he could hardly say anything.
Link grinned. "Well thank you for stopping by. You sounded great, Doody."
--
Doody packed up his guitar again. “Thanks guys. I'll come around again. Or you can come to our room though it doesn't have all these instruments…”
Tracy smiled. “Maybe. Nice to see you too Danny. See you in class.”
Doody got to his feet and headed to the door. “Bye,” he called.
--
Danny nodded at Tracy before leaving with Doody.
Link looked over at Tracy. "I am glad they seem to be getting along again."
--
“Me too,” she said. “He's much happier.” She tugged him close again, starting to dance.
Doody walked down the corridor. “I'll just leave this in our room,” he said, nodding to his guitar case.
--
Link wrapped his arms around her and swayed with her.
Danny nodded his head. "Cool. I uh....I really meant it, you know. You are good."
--
Doody smiled, ducking his head. “Thanks, man. It's … It's a lot of fun. I like playing.”
--
"It's the truth. You don't need to be thanking me," he said.
--
Doody smiled again, his cheeks flushing. They reached their room and he left his guitar inside.
“So, look around first or go for a beer?”
--
Danny shrugged. "I'm easy. What do you wanna do?"
--
“Let's grab a beer first then look.”
--
Danny nodded his head. "Yeah. Cool. Beer sounds good."
--
“It was cool to have you there. I mean. You know it … It can be fun. They're a bit … They care about stuff a lot. So that can be intense. But they're okay, I think.”
--
"Yeah, definitely intense. But like.... I was there for you. I mean.... Like I don't really know them and Tracy is kinda pushy. But it was cool to hear you."
--
Doody glanced down. “Cool. Well it's good to spend time with you here. Sorry about…” He shrugged. He shouldn't bring up the weirdness. It would just make it weird again.
--
Danny didn't like the idea he had upset Doody again and that was why he had glanced down. "It's cool, man," he said, clapping Doody on the back, then wrapping his arm around his neck and ruffling his hair up with the other. He was just horsing around so it was fine.
--
Doody jumped, not expecting Danny to grab him like that. He tried to think of really unsexy things as he laughed and tried to wriggle away.
But he didn't really mind Danny touching him. At all.
--
Danny let him go and grinned at him. "Come on, let's get that beer."
--
Doody nodded, sliding a hand through his hair and straightening his glasses. “Sure.” He reached out, wrapping his arm around Danny's shoulder and reaching for his hair. (Not that he'd ever mess up Danny's hair. It would be too far.)
--
Danny squirmed in his grip. "Hey, man. Watch the hair," he said.
--
Doody released him and chuckled. “Kidding. Kidding.” He held up his hands with a grin. “I wouldn't. I value my life,” he said jokingly.
--
Danny grinned back at him. "Good. Glad you know that."
--
Doody ducked his head as they reached the bar. “I do.” He headed inside, his heart beating pretty fast but … Mostly in control of his body. Maybe things would be okay. He could handle it.
