Brooke knocked on the door of Grantaire's studio a little nervously. She really hoped this was the right thing to do - what if she got their hopes up for nothing? She maybe should wait a little until she was sure. But then she'd be keeping it from them and it was their baby. Could be their baby.
Grantaire answered it, smiling when he saw Brooke. "Good morning. Come in."
"Morning. Is - oh yes. He is. Hey Enjolras." She waved.
--
Enjolras looked up from where he was sitting on the couch in Grantaire's studio and smiled at Brooke. "Hello, Brooke. Good to see you."
--
Brooke glanced around. "Wow Grantaire these are great."
Grantaire ducked his head. "Thank you," he said, slightly awkwardly.
"A lot of naked husband art," Brooke added with a grin. "That's kinda adorable."
"He is my muse," Grantaire said with a shrug, grinning at Enjolras fondly.
--
Enjolras grinned. "See, an unbiased opinion on your talent, Grantaire. And though mine is perhaps biased, that doesn't mean I'm wrong either."
His grin widened when Grantaire looked at him and grinned. "I certainly do not mind being his muse."
--
Brooke shook her head. "Definitely not just you being biased."
She smiled fondly. "Too adorable." She bit her lip, wanting to tell them. God she hoped it was true, they would be so happy. "So. I came here because .... I threw up yesterday. And haven't felt great since."
Grantaire's brow furrowed.
--
Enjolras furrowed his brow also. "Oh, I am.... sorry to hear that. Do you need us to take you to see Trixie? Perhaps you are coming down with something...." Enjolras had to admit he was confused why she would come here to tell them that but of course would go with her if she wanted that.
--
Brooke smiled. "Well yeah I do want you to come with me to see Trixie but not because I think I've got a stomach flu. I might have come down with something. Maybe three weeks ago?" She said with a grin.
Grantaire raised an eyebrow. "Oh. Ohhhh." He remembered his neighbour now, how ill she would get when she was expecting. "Really?"
Brooke shrugged. "Maybe? I'm not sure so don't get your hopes up. But it could mean that it worked."
--
Enjolras stood up instantly when he realised what she was implying. "Oh. Well we should take you to Trixie and find out." He really hoped it has worked. He looked at Grantaire and smiled widely.
--
They headed towards the infirmary.
Brooke grinned. "I could be wrong. I didn't know whether I should wait a little to be sure but... I figured you'd want to know when I suspected."
Grantaire nodded, feeling suddenly nervous. "Yes. Thanks for telling us. It's fine if you are, we won't be angry. It might not happen immediately, we know that."
Trixie raised an eyebrow when she saw them. "I wonder why you lot could be here. Do you suspect it worked?"
Brooke nodded and explained her symptoms.
"Sounds promising. No guarantee though. Pop through here with me and we'll take a look. The scanner here can do it in seconds, no need to take blood."
Grantaire hesitated.
"Come through," Brooke said. "I get to keep my clothes on for this and you should be here."
--
Enjolras nodded his head. "Yes, if it hasn't worked, it is fine. It will be wonderful if it has worked, but we know that it might not happen so quickly."
"Hello, Trixie," he said when he saw her.
Enjolras reached for Grantaire's hand and squeezed it before he walked in through with Brooke after she said it was alright.
--
Brooke stood in place and Trixie started the scanner.
Grantaire gripped Enjolras' hand, repeating to himself over and over that he shouldn't get his hopes up.
Trixie squeaked. "Goodness!" She turned the screen to face them. It read 'PREGNANT' in big letters. "It did work!"
--
Enjolras's eyes widened and he looked at Grantaire, grinning like a loon. "It.... It worked. We're going to have a baby, Grantaire!!" he said, moving forward to hug his husband tightly.
--
Grantaire was standing frozen in place, his eyes wide. He was completely stunned. He hadn't really been expecting it to work. And so soon. He hugged Enjolras dazedly.
Brooke laughed. "Wow. We did it! First time. Go us." She laughed again, hardly able to believe she was pregnant.
--
Enjolras moved back from Grantaire and hugged Brooke too. "Thank you, so much for this Brooke. Because of you, Grantaire and I are going to have a child."
--
Grantaire nodded, stepping forward to hug her too. "Yes. Thank you. I - really?"
Trixie laughed. "Yes really. Congratulations, all of you."
Brooke hugged them back. "What now? I mean, what do I do?"
Trixie shook her head. "It's very early. We won't be able to see Baby for another few weeks. You just need to take care of yourself and rest for now."
--
Enjolras couldn't stop smiling. They were going to have a baby. It was actually happening.
"Is there anything we can do for you, Brooke?"
--
Brooke shook her head, dazed. "I don't think so. I just feel a little nauseous but... No I'm good so far."
Grantaire shook himself, still dazed. "Let us know. If you need anything just let us know."
"Sure. You going to tell people?"
Grantaire looked at Enjolras. "Not... Immediately. Not for a while. I think."
--
Enjolras looked at Trixie. "Is it better if we wait to tell people. Is there a particular time we should wait until?"
--
Trixie tilted her head slightly. "Most things go wrong in the first twelve weeks. You're five weeks along already. We count from two weeks before conception. It's up to you when you tell people."
"We can wait until twelve weeks," Brooke said.
Grantaire nodded. "Yes. Perhaps it would be best." He looked at Enjolras to see if he agreed.
--
Enjolras nodded his head. "Alright. I will do my best not to let my joy over this show too much and give it away," he said, smiling.
--
Brooke grinned. "Yeah, good luck with that."
Grantaire shook his head. "I think my walking around in a daze is more likely to raise suspicion. I can't quite believe it..."
Trixie smiled. "A common feeling for expectant fathers."
--
Enjolras wrapped his arm around Grantaire's waist and nuzzled against him. "You are an expectant father now, my love." He kissed Grantaire's cheek softly.
--
Grantaire's eyes widened even more.
Trixie chuckled. "A common reaction too. Do you need to sit down? A strong drink?" She said teasingly.
Grantaire shook his head. "I'm fine. It'll take a little while to sink in."
Brooke rubbed his back. "I'll share all my symptoms. So you know it's really happening."
--
Enjolras grinned. "And I'll be sure to remind you of it often when we are alone," he said.
--
Grantaire smiled and hugged Brooke again. "Thank you so much."
She hugged him back, then took his hand and brought it to her stomach. "You're welcome. Completely welcome."
Grantaire stared at his hand. Their child was there, below his hand. He was rendered speechless again.
--
Enjolras rubbed his back gently, and kissed the back of his neck lightly.
--
Grantaire leaned against him. He smiled over his shoulder and took a deep breath.
"Wow."
Brooke took Enjolras' hand and placed it on top of Grantaire's.
"Baby, meet your daddies."
--
Enjolras smiled back at Grantaire and wrapped one of his arms around Grantaire from behind.
"Daddies..." He repeated. "This is.... So wonderful. You really are giving us the most amazing gift, Brooke." He rubbed Grantaire's hand lightly.
--
Grantaire nodded. "We'll never be able to thank you enough." His throat felt tight, his eyes stung.
Brooke laughed softly. "Let me dress him or her. Though I dress you guys already..." She shook her head. "Honestly, seeing how happy you guys are already is thanks enough."
--
Enjolras squeezed Grantaire's hip lightly.
"Yes, we are very happy. Grantaire will be the most wonderful father."
--
"As will you," Trixie said. "What a very lucky little baby they are already." She grinned. "They are joining a wonderful family."
Grantaire smiled. "Yes. They really are."
--
Enjolras wasn't as experienced as Grantaire with babies but hopefully he could learn what he needed to with Fantine. "I love you," he murmured against Grantaire's ear.
--
Grantaire leaned back against him. “I love you too.”
Brooke blinked. “Stop being so cute, you’ll make me cry!” she said with a smile.
--
Enjolras smiled back at her. “Sorry, we will try to contain ourselves, right my love?” he asked Grantaire.
--
Grantaire nodded, chuckling slightly. “I might cry myself. It’s… overwhelming.” He shook his head slightly.
Brooke grinned and hugged them both again. “I’m gonna… leave you guys to get your head around it. Gonna go tell Jeremy, but that’s all.”
Grantaire nodded. “Of course.”
“We should meet up though, kinda regularly? So you guys know how we’re doing.” She patted her stomach. “Like, the day after tomorrow? For lunch?”
--
Enjolras hugged Grantaire tighty from behind. “It’s okay, my love,” he said and then moved so he could hug Brooke again.
“Yes, lunch sounds perfect,” he said, smiling widely.
--
Brooke smiled. “Great. See you then.” She rubbed Grantaire’s arm. “Breathe, honey. You have about 35 weeks to prepare.”
Grantaire laughed slightly. “Thank you. Yes. We’ll see you then.” He hugged her again, and she waved at Trixie.
“Goodbye, Brooke. If you need anything, you know where I am.” She beamed at Enjolras and Grantaire. “I’m very happy for you both.”
--
Enjolras smiled and wrapped his arm around Grantaire again.
“Thank you, Brooke,” he said and then looked at Trixie. “Thank you, Trixie. It really is the most wonderful news,” he said.
--
She nodded. “It is. Splendid news. I’ll have to give you your own personalised baby classes before the little one gets here,” she said with a smile. “Anything you need.”
Grantaire nodded. “Yes. Please.” He smiled. “Thank you for helping.”
Trixie shook her head. “It was fascinating, actually. I have delivered hundreds of babies. I’ve never helped to conceive one before.”
--
“Thank you, Trixie. That would be wonderful,” he said.
He smiled and hugged Grantaire tightly from behind again.
--
Grantaire rubbed his arm. “I need… to sit down.” He smiled at Enjolras. “Come on, before I can no longer stand.”
--
“Yes, lets go to the studio and you can sit down and take this all in,” he said. “Goodbye, Trixie. And thank you,” he said.
He took Grantaire’s hand and started to lead him to the studio. “Do you need me to carry you?” he asked, teasingly.
--
Grantaire laughed as he followed him out. “I think I can make it to the studio before I swoon.”
He shook his head. “I just … I don’t believe it, you know? We did plan it, but … I don’t know if I believed it would work. And certainly not so soon.”
--
Enjolras nodded his head "I understand completely. I am rather shocked it worked myself. And on our first try too. But it did. And... We are going to have a baby. We will have our own little family."
--
Grantaire let them in to the studio and tugged Enjolras over to the couch. He grinned.
"I know. And yet I don't really believe it's actually happening." He laughed slightly.
--
He smiled and sat down, tugging Grantaire into his lap and he wrapped his arms around him. "Thank you so much, my love. For loving me, marrying me, agreeing to have this child with me. You have changed my life and made me so completely happy."
--
Grantaire smiled, leaning against him. "Thank you for encouraging this. For believing it could happen. Your optimism is a good balance to my skepticism."
--
He nuzzled Grantaire's cheek. "I will always be here to balance your skepticism, my love. Always."
--
Grantaire smiled. "Good. Our - our child will need both influences. I don't want them becoming cynical like their old Papa. They must have your optimism and hope."
--
"They are going to be so loved and protected and taken care of," he said. "They have us. And they will have so many others that will love and protect them."
--
Grantaire nodded, closing his eyes. "I never imagined I would be a father. Ever."
--
"Neither did I. I never imagined I would fall in love and marry. My life was meant to end that day. That is what I thought. I believed my purpose was to die from France. But truly.... My life started that day. And I live for France and you."
--
Grantaire smiled. "And our child."
He paused. "We are not calling it France," he said teasingly.
--
"Yes, and our child," he said, smiling warmly.
He chuckled. "I am not so sure. But we should start thinking of names."
--
Grantaire nodded. "Yes. Perhaps not seriously until we tell everyone. They'll be able to tell the sex in a few months."
--
"Do you wish to find out before they are born?" He did not mind either way.
--
"I think it'd be nice. If you have no objection." He looked up at Enjolras.
--
"'None whatsoever," he said, smiling and lowering his head to kiss Grantaire softly.
--
Grantaire grinned against his lips.
"Not Patria either," he said teasingly.
--
Enjolras moved back a little and chuckled. "No, not that either."
"I cannot wait to meet them. Hold them. Our beautiful baby."
--
Grantaire shook his head. “Neither can I.” He kissed Enjolras softly and curled close to him. He had never imagined he could feel this happy.
