Grantaire rarely got worked up like this. But Paris had changed so much, and what Enjolras had said ... it made it worse. He had been fine with the idea of the streets changing - things evolved. But if it had been engineered, as Enjolras suggested ...
He had returned to their room, to find Courfeyrac was alone. Enjolras and Combeferre were in the library.
"Did Enjolras tell you why they changed the streets?" he asked, shaking his head. He was angry, and had begun to express why he was angry, not paying much attention to Courfeyrac's reaction.
"I mean - that is the whole point of Paris! The streets were there for the people, not for those who wished to control them. Paris herself was on the side of those who lived in her, and that they used the streets to try to - to impose their will, to stop resistance... Yes, that can be futile and I don't have the faith in it you do, but the whole point of Paris is that it encourages it. It shelters, it protects, it ..." He shook his head. "It is wrong to change it to bend the population to your will."
