Patsy had been walking home from a very early morning delivery when she met Chummy pushing Freddie in his pram. He was blinking sleepily up at them.
"Fighting sleep, naughty monkey," Chummy had said, her voice fond though she was clearly as tired as Patsy was. "It used to send him right off, you know, but it seems he is growing bored of it." She smiled fondly. "I had to walk with him, you see, Peter hasn't had a wink of sleep and I thought anything is worth a try."
"Walk back to Nonnatus House with me," Patsy suggested, climbing off her bike. "I'm sure you would be welcome for breakfast."
"Perhaps," Chummy said. "If Young Sir here manages to fall asleep."
They walked in silence after that - which was reassuring. There was nothing Patsy hated more than small talk. But they were both tired, and it was nice to have some quiet companionship as they made their way through the streets that were just starting to wake up. She closed her eyes for a moment, breathing deep as she imagined climbing into her bed with a mug of Horlicks.
"Patsy!" There was a note of panic in Chummy's voice that made Patsy's eyes start open. She thought she might be about to walk into something, but when she opened her eyes she was - in a room. A library, by the looks of it, a cavernous thing.
"How on Earth?" she asked, looking around in a daze.
