Tarvek was working furiously in his lab, as he'd been for the last several days. He'd only slept for a few hours at a stretch. The project wasn't even important, but being in a Spark fugue kept him from thinking. It was the first time he'd intentionally put himself in this position. He usually managed to control it, unless it was something extremely interesting that he was working on.
But even on short rations, his food supply was dwindling. He hadn't even eaten today. But why should he care? No one would care if anything happened to him. Gil had made that clear enough.
Suddenly a cool hand touched his back, and he turned. "Majesty," murmured Adele, one of his guardian clanks he'd built for the school. "This is not good for you." Etienne was standing behind her, his metallic face expressionless. He gave a slight nod, agreeing with his sister.
Tarvek sighed. "It's not your job to worry about me," he muttered, flushing.
Etienne stepped forward. "You instilled in us compassion, majesty, and an urge to care. We will not abandon you to this insanity."
He scowled at the pair. Why had he made them so well? They were supposed to guard the children, not him. "Then what do you suggest?"
Adele gently herded him towards the door. "Go eat," she said softly. "Then sleep. Do not return to this lab today. We will not let you."
He glared at them, but went out the door, his scowl deepening when they both bowed elegantly. Damn their impudence, anyway. He sighed and began walking towards the kitchen; not quickly at all. He wasn't eager to see other people.
