Mary tilted her head. "True. But he is a man, so he can be managed." She leaned forward to meet Cecy's eyes. "Promise me you won't do anything rash, though? I will help you figure out how to tell your brother, when there is something to tell."
Cecy nodded, sighing again. "I promise. That's why I still need to see him."
Mary smiled. "All right. Mr Hammond can have his lunch brought to him for another while yet." She glanced at the time. "Speaking of which, I should find my William. He's no doubt running his father ragged. Nice to speak to you, Hunith. I'll see you later, Cecelia."
"Goodbye," Cecy called as Mary left. She pulled a face as soon as she was gone, slumping back in her chair and glancing at Hunith. "Nothing will ever convince William to let me marry Jack."
