Tarvek sat at his desk, frowning in concentration, a wrench in one hand and clockwork and odd pieces of metal strewn about him. He'd been working for several hours, but he hadn't gotten very far yet. He glanced down at his sketches, deliberating a moment on which design to ultimately use. He figured that the clockwork servitors were up to him, as Gil had so generously offered to help with the music. He was slightly uneasy about that offer, in truth. While Gil had predictably mocked his idea of holding a ball, it had seemed good-natured, and he genuinely seemed to want to help him.
He was uncertain about the other boy. He was... sweet lightning, everything between them had been wonderful. But Tarvek had learned long ago not to trust things that seemed perfect. He was waiting, tensely, for the other shoe to drop, for Gil to reveal his hand, his motives and machinations. The odds of him actually caring about Tarvek were laughable. In Tarvek's experience, no one did anything for him without wanting something in return. Except, perhaps, Agatha. And god, there was another complication... He sighed, setting down his wrench and pulling off his glasses to run a hand over his eyes. Gil loved Agatha. It was obvious. And she loved him. This whole thing had been stupid on Tarvek's part. He knew it. He'd known it when he'd started it. He knew how this was going to end. Why would either of them want him, a twisted, evil little snake, when they could have each other? There was only going to be one loser here, and it was himself. He lay his head down on the table, forcing his breathing into slow, even gulps of air. It was that or start sobbing...
