Mary had no idea how it had happened.
She had been wandering through the halls of Downton, thinking about how everything would be changing soon. They were to become a hospital for wounded soldiers, a scheme of Cousin Isobel's, backed of course by Granny. They were still trying to outdo one another in everything. Isobel, with her previous experience, was of course in charge. Granny did not like that, but as she realised why Isobel was determined to spend so much time on the project, she didn't say much. At least not when Isobel was present.
Mary was just eager for distraction as Isobel. And for the same reason - Matthew had left for training. He was safe, for now, but they all knew it was a matter of time before he left for the front. Mary didn't know how she would bear it when he left England.
So she had been distracted as she walked though the wing of the house that was to be dedicated to the hospital. She turned a corner, and the floor seemed to tilt suddenly. She reached out to steady herself against the wall, but instead of feeling cool stone underneath her palm, she felt something like ... metal.
She looked around. The walls were all made of metal, and the floor. This wasn't Downton. But where was she? And how had she ended up here?
"Hello?" she called, her voice shaking slightly.
