Godric walked around the interior of the home. It was one large, open space, built to face the sun in order to make the most of the natural light. He would need to gather rushes to spread on the punched earth floor, and he had to ensure the smoke would escape adequately from the hole in the thatched roof. The lot also boasted and outbuilding which, Godric assumed, would serve as the latrine. That, too, would have to be investigated.
Glancing around, Godric noted with some pleasure that whomever had created this home for him had decorated it appropriately. Shields and antlers hung on the walls. Over the doorway hung a broadsword, its blade etched with a runic inscription dedicating it to the war-god, Tiw. The pagan phrase was not his preference, but it would suffice.
Godric left the house and walked outside. He surveyed his land. Yes, he could build a paddock to hold a horse, provided he could find one in this place. If not, he would need to find a dog. He could not be content without an animal companion. He stood still and inhaled deeply. The air was fresh, though chilled by autumn. It had been spring for him before his arrival, another sign of the strangeness of this place.
