Who: Lily, James, Sirius, Peter, Remus, and Molly
What: Flying to get their minds off the present
When: Thursday night
Where: Quidditch Pitch
Rating: PG
Status: Incomplete

While the invitation had been spontaneous and unannounced, she hoped that there would be a good group out on the pitch tonight. The more people there, the more likely she would be able to forget the worries that seemed to clutter her mind. She kept trying to tell herself she was being ridiculous, overly worried, but she couldn't help it. The attacks were becoming more and more frequent and it seemed that the only connection was muggle borns and those who attended Hogwarts. She didn't like how her odds stood with her own family. Still, there was no use fretting in her room all by herself. She needed something to cool off and calm her mind. Flying seemed the perfect answer.

She had convinced Molly to come out with them, reassuring her friend it was just a friendly flight around the pitch. She had only heard from Sirius about coming, but hoped to see a certain boy there and the rest of his friends. She bounded out of the castle, happy to be outside. The night was starting to turn cold, but she was sure the flying would warm them up in no time.

"Thanks for coming out," she said to Molly, taking her arm in hers on their way down to the pitch. "I think tonight will be fun!"

"Yes, of course is will!" Molly smiled brightly, hoping she could mask the sheer terror she was already feeling just from standing on the Quidditch Pitch.

Molly didn't like brooms. Well, she liked brooms, but only for their practical household uses. When it came to brooms that flew Molly prefered to be about fifty feet away holding a "Go Gryffindor" banner and closing her eyes everytime one of them went into a dive.

But Lily was her best friend, and she'd seemed so sad lately! If a fly around the Pitch with those hooligans was what she wanted then Molly couldn't very well say no, could she? Not ruddy likely!

"Fun fun fun!"

James'd gotten wind of Lily's intentions through Sirius earlier in the day. He felt himself get excited at the prospect not only because it was a fly around, which meant a chance to show off, but also because it would give all of them a chance to forget about the events of the last few days and just loosen up. In cahoots with Sirius, he'd dragged Moony and Wormtail along despite their protests that it was dark and probably not safe with everything going on.

Underneath his arm was his Silver Arrow 900, a revival of the old Silver Arrows that were the best racing brooms in their day. He smiled to himself as he trudged along a ways behind Lily and Molly, hoping that he could just get up and go, letting the wind run through his hair and losing himself in the familiar feeling of flying. The Gryffindor Quidditch team also needed a good impromptu practise after last match... even if it was unofficial and only half of the team was present.

As soon as the Pitch was in view, James grinned widely and turned back to call out to Sirius, "Oi, isn't that sight always enough to make you giddy?!"

Sirius needed this. He really, really needed this. Getting out of the castle, getting off the ground for a while, it would be bliss. Maybe he could get some distance from those almost-memories that kept crowding their way into his every thought. Maybe he could figure out what had been happening to him the last few days, what those black holes in his memories meant.

Mostly he just wanted to remember, and to forget. It was all so bloody confusing...

"You said it mate. I can't wait to get up there. Feels like ages since we've flown just for the Hell of it, eh?"

Peter did not fly. He had tried, in first year during their first flying lessons, and failed miserably, however he found himself making his way down to the Quidditch Pitch, feet carrying him to his destination, while his mind concerned itself with other matters.

Such things as just what the hell was up with Sirius. The two of them were not as close as James was with the other teen, yet Peter had thought he knew Sirius well enough to read him. The things he had been spouting off had not been the Sirius Black that he knew...and Sirius seemed to have no idea what he had been talking about when it was pointed out.

It seemed like betrayal to his friend, but Peter had not wanted Lily to be alone with him. Not when he was this way, which was one of the reasons he had agreed to come along.

When he found that grass, rather then stone, was underneath his feet, Peter pulled himself from his thoughts and looked around the grounds.

James and Sirius were close to the pitch. James! If he was here....surely things would be alright.

"Oy!" He called out, hurrying to catch up with the two dark haired wizards, giving a wave. His grin was strained though, worries still plaguing the forefront of his mind.

When he was close enough to speak to them without having to shout, Peter slowed. He wanted normality back and Peter was sure that these two felt the same in that aspect.

"Lily invited you too, James?"

James took in the sight with a wistful sigh as he jogged the rest of the way with broom in hand. He loved feeling the cool night air rush past as he started to catch up with the two girls ahead. When he heard Peter's voice calling out to them, however, he abruptly stopped and turned, giving Pete a wave till he'd caught up.

"Well not really," he replied with a smirk, darting a look over at Sirius before grinning at Peter, "but y'know me, always ready for a good fly. D'you want to have a go tonight, too?" James remembered all too well their first year flying lesson, how he'd kicked off brilliantly before most of the others, and how poor Peter was one of the last to rise. James had laughed then, but as he got to know the boy better, it had turned into friendly ribbing.

"My Silver Arrow can handle a shite flyer, don't worry, yeah?" He reached out and ruffled Pete's hair before turning back to catch up with the girls. Soon as he'd gotten near enough, he ran at Lily and caught her from behind, bringing her up into a swinging hug.

"This air feels GREAT!" He yelled, happy to be out with his mates and the girl of his dreams.

Lily couldn't help but laugh at Molly's feigned excitement of their night flying. She gave her friend a hug from the side, her head resting on her shoulder for just a moment. She really had the best friends.

"Don't worry, I won't let those boys do anything crazy. Besides, I think Peter will be coming and he's not a huge fan of flying. We'll all keep it simple. Ooooh, we should have gotten hot chocolate!" She made a little pouty face just as James attacked her from behind. She gave a little yelp, but laughed as he swung her around. What use to bug her before only seemed natural now.

"Hey! Put me down and help me find a broom for Molly! Something good, that isn't too fast for her." She squirmed in his arms, trying to get her feet back on the ground. When he finally put her down, she glanced back at Sirius and Peter right behind, giving them a wave. "Glad you boys came out!" she called back, a smile on her face. This was a brilliant idea. She was already beginning to feel better.

Molly did her best not to give Potter a dissaproving glare. She really didn't like how quickly Lily was warming up to the young man. She also didn't like how much time she was spending with Potters hooligan friends. Well, that wasn't totally fair. Pettigrew was a sweet boy, and Lupin was level headed. It was mostly that Sirius Black, with his busy hands and loose morals, that she disliked.

"I could always just watch," she chimed in hesitantly. Honestly, the idea of flying with these reckless Gryffindors was not at all apealing.

Peter had chuckled at James remark, sounding nervous at the very offer of being able to ride his mate's broom; Peter wanted to be an able flyer -- Hell, he had wanted to join the Quidditch team!--however he just was not talented with brooms, or much of anything else. "It's alright," He had said, voice quiet.

When he saw Lily and Molly, Peter raised his hand, giving a wave, and a more sure smile. "Hi Lily, Molly..."

It was nice, to spend time with his friends and fellow Gryffindor's once again. Nice, to have a normal moment with them.

"You're not flying?" He asked this, directing his attention to the older of the red haired girls. Peter had walked up close to where the Witches stood, and James, and drew to a stop.

"I could watch with Molly. Let the experienced fliers have a go first." Peter really did not want to make a fool of himself.

James pouted excessively when he had to put Lily down, but as soon as he'd heard Molly and Peter's statements, he looked absolutely scandalised.

"Watch? Surely you jest!" At that, he shoved his broomstick into Peter's chest, giving him a wide grin and tilting his head in the direction of the Pitch. "C'mon Petey, why don't you have a go? That broom is brills. You'll be safe. And you!" James turned on Molly, putting his hands mockingly on his hips and raising his eyebrows to a perfectly shocked level.

"Why, we'll just have to find you a good broom, won't we! There're decent ones in the broom cupboard, if you don't mind a slow start and rubbish elevation..." He trailed off as he headed over toward the nearby cupboard in question, disappearing into it as he rummaged.

Sirius walked over and threw his arm around Molly, ignoring his shocked expression.

"Don't worry, James knows brooms. He'll get you on the safest kitten in the bunch!" He winked at her, amused when she just glared back.

"Prongs! Get our Molly something that purrs, eh?"

He turned and winked at Peter.

"You're not so bad on a broom Pete, you just need a little confidence! Brooms can smell fear you know."

Lily knew how Molly felt about the boys and she winced when she saw Sirius sling an arm around her, but couldn't help but laugh at Molly's glare. She shook her head, taking Sirius' arm and pulling him away. "C'mon Sirus, while James is looking for a broom, I'll race ya! I know we have one bet going already, care to make the stakes a little more interesting?" She wiggled her eyebrows and grinned, rushing past him to grab her broom from the shed.

She patted Peter on the back, grinning. "I hope you share a fly around the pitch Peter!" she said, waving him towards the center of the field. "Tonight is a great night to fly!"

Peter's hands had reached out, catching hold of the broom instinctively. "I--Well..." He stumbled over his own words, cheeks burning as a deeper flush crept into his pale skin. Sometimes it was a touch frustrating that his friends were quite so good at flying, and that they were so eager to draw him into that fold.

Now though, Peter found no time to worry about that, there were bigger problems in mind and right now he just wanted to have fun. Grinning sheepishly, he gave a slight shrug.

"I guess I will..." He said, answering Lily's comment, his eyes all the while fixed on Sirius, who grinned looking better then he had in days, and Molly who looked uncomfortable with the boy's arm around her.

"I'll fly if you give it a chance, Molly?"
