Who: Amycus and Adelaide
What: Trying to find out how to break their engagement
When: Sunday evening
Where: The stairs and then who knows
Rating: PG-13 at least
Status: Incomplete

Amycus wasn't even trying to hide how pissed off he was as he made his way out of the dormitory, snapped at a group of first years who were trying to come in the portal as he was going out. Normally he ignored them with the exception of Lucius' messenger brat, and then he only spoke to the child when it was absolutely necessary. He stormed out of the dungeon and made his way up the stairs, the letter from Father clutched in his hand tightly.

He stopped on the landing and read the letter again, oblivious to the groups of students that had to split to go around him as he stood in the walkway. His eyes sought out the most damning parts of the letter. A fine match with a good family, You are already acquainted with the daughter and her parents, She is the obvious choice, he crumpled the letter in his hand with a barely audible curse and turned in the direction of Ravenclaw Tower and waited impatiently for Adelaide's arrival.

Adelaide had tried to prepare herself for the confrontation with Amycus. Despite her ability to patch things up through the journals she had a feeling that this just sunk them back to where they had been. Unfortunate, yet she would just have to find another way to get around it. While she did not mind Amycus as much as he seemed to mind her, he was still not her ideal match. She didn't want to admit who she thought actually would be but at least it was something they could agree on at the moment. Perhaps they would actually be able to work together through this and find a way to break the engagement.

Her mother had actually been the one to write and inform her of her engagement to Amycus Carrow. She felt a little betrayed by her father, as if he didn't have the guts to write and tell his own daughter the kind of betrayal she surely felt now. Still, how could they know she did not care for Amycus Carrow? She was actually lucky, being betrothed to someone so close to her own age. She had always complained about an older husband, perhaps her parents thought they were actually giving her exactly what she wanted. She could only roll her eyes at the parchment, tossing it on her dresser. How could she tell Dominic?

She made her way down the Ravenclaw Tower, wondering how Amycus would greet her. Hopefully not too harshly. She saw him standing at the bottom of the stairs, an eyebrow raised as she skipped down the steps. She could tell by his expression he had read the letter.

"So," she said, in a way of greeting. "How are we going to stop this?"

Amycus frowned as he watched Adelaide skip down the steps, anyone watching her would think she was happy about all of this. He waited until she was standing on the landing beside him to raise the parchment he held in his hand out to her. "Now I know why my parents were asking me about you. They were planning this with yours. According to Father, your parents were very impressed by me at the Ball. In the 5 minutes I talked with them they decided that I was an appropriate husband for you," he said, with a bitter laugh.

"Murder comes to mind. Unfortunately our parents are a bit of my range right now," he told her, smiling as if he was joking although he was deadly serious. "Would you mind if we went somewhere a bit more private to continue this discussion? I've been the subject of enough gossip as of late," he said, coldly. He was trying to remind himself that Adelaide was a victim in this just like this was but without their parents nearby he had no one to take his temper out on but her.

She echoed his laugh, shaking her head. At least they were able to brush it off in a way. "It seems you're the one to blame for all this," she said, the teasing obvious in her voice. "Who would have thought my parents were so impressionable? You must have really had them in that five minutes. What did you talk about?" Knowing this piece of information made her wonder what her father could have seen in Amycus. She was sure they had looked into his family lineage quite intensely, but choosing him after only five minutes? Something didn't seem to fit correctly.

"Of course," she said, nodding her head. "Perhaps a walk outside? Harder for those to listen in outside," she said. She started to head that way, her hands behind her back as she thought. "I hope you don't mean to murder me. While I find you a respectable wizard, you are hardly my type. I would rather work with you through this and find a way out." Although murder was beginning to look like the only way. The only other way she could think to get out of it was to tarnish the other's name. But she doubted whether he would do such a thing. She certainly would not.

"We should put the blame where it truly belongs, on your parents" Amycus told her as they started down the stairs. "I barely remember meeting your parents, let alone what we talked about. Most likely school," he told her, keeping his voice bland as he looked around at their audience.

He waited until they were outside of the castle to continue speaking. "As I said, our parents are a bit out of my range at the moment so murder plans will have to wait. My objection to this plan is not because you aren't my type, because you are as I'm sure my Father knows somehow. I never plan to get married to anyone," he told her. His objection to getting married was no secret, he'd stated it often enough over the years.

"I would send an owl immediately refusing to go along with their arrangement but it wouldn't do any good. Father has already started looking at dates for next summer. He knows far more about you than I expected since I refused to answer him," he said, his distress somewhat obvious.

"My parents?" she asked, looking over at him, trying to control her own voice. She understood the need to keep things calm and collected while around the other students. She didn't need to make a scene, she was sure they would be able to work everything out civilly.

She raised a surprised eyebrow at his comment. "You never want to be married? How would you get away with that?" It was an interesting enough concept although rarely sported within the pureblood circles.

"We'll have to get clever," she said. "If we want this to end. And soon by the sounds of it." A year engagement was long for a typical marriage, but one Adelaide would not argue. She was suddenly happy that she was a 6th year.

She nodded her head towards the lake, knowing it would probably be better to continue their conversation in a more private setting. "Do you have any ideas?" she asked.

"Yes your parents. According to Father's letter," Amycus said, looking down at the crumpled parchment in his hand before continuing, "they're the ones who 'initiated the correspondence'," his voice disdainful as he quoted his father's letter. There was no doubt in his mind his Father was telling him the truth about that. All of the witches his parents had considered before had been family friends in Greece.

He gazed at her silently for a moment before answering. "I've never met someone I wished to marry," he said, hoping the lie wasn't obvious. He knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Alecto and since he couldn't marry her he'd chosen to never get married at all. "And as for getting away with it, I don't know how yet. But I will," he said his voice soft and cold.

"Before Mother finds the perfect spot in Greece," he told her with a bitter laugh as they walked towards the lake. Amycus was certain that her parents must have insisted on the long engagement because if it was up to his, the wedding would have been taking place as soon as he finished school and he wouldn't be planning his trip with Rabastan. It would be a trip with his new bride from which they'd be expected to return with the next generation of the Carrow family already conceived. "The easiest solution would be to ruin the other's reputation. And since I don't hate you and that would ruin your chances of making a good match later, I'd rather find some other way out of this," he told her sitting down on the grass. "And I'm assuming your parents don't care about the rumors circulating about me," he added turning to look at her.

Adelaide pursed her lips together, but she didn't fight that notion. She was sure if they were impressed with Amycus from the party, the wheels would have been in motion. She was sure they would have looked into the family to see he would be graduating this year and that his parents were probably looking for a bride to be already.

She opened her mouth to argue, but quickly shut it again. They weren't here to argue, she wanted to make sure of that. For whatever reason he had, she wasn't going to continue to push the subject. They both didn't want to be in this position and she needed to keep him on her side, not upset at her.

She raised an eyebrow, unsure of what Amycus was saying. "I don't think we should go to that extreme," she said. "I would not want to tarnish your name or your families either. Although if our parents found out that the other was not desirable for their match..." She let the sentence trail off, giving a small shrug. She looked up at him, shaking her head. "Rumors? I'm afraid I don't know what you're speaking of."

"I'm glad to hear that we agree on something other than wanting out of this engagement," Amycus told her, looking at her out of the corner of his eye. "Although if it weren't for Alecto, I would say go ahead and ruin my family name. I couldn't care less about the rest of my family. And that was before this happened," he told her seriously.

"Since ruining each other is out of the question, and it's doubtful outright refusal will do any good..." he said letting his voice trail off. He was at a loss right now for how to handle this situation. In the past he'd always been able to personally dissuade the girls family from pursuing it but he had a feeling that wouldn't work this time. "You haven't heard the rumors about me? I'm apparently involved with Rabastan and am indecently close with my sister. Not to mention the innocent girl I'm stringing along" he said, rattling off the various things that had been suggested about him. Or in some cases outright said.

Adelaide was surprised to hear that from Amycus, but made no comment. It wasn't unusual for pureblood children to hold grudges against their own families; sometimes it seemed like a family tradition. She envied those that had a warm relationship with their parents, but it typically seemed that every home was at least a little cold and distant. If not for her father, she would be placed in that category as well.

She sighed, shaking her head. She had hoped Amycus would have a solution to their problem, but he seemed to be as stuck as she was. "The best bet would be if our parents found better matches for us," she said. "Well, for me at least. The only person I can think of that would have a better lineage than yourself would be Lucius and I will not go down that path." She shuddered. "Besides, I think I heard that he and Black were back together. The girl that is." She snorted a little as she thought of that. She never thought Narcissa Black would stoop down to be with someone who had been with her traitor cousin.

She looked at Amycus, nodding her head. "No, I have heard of those, I did not know that was what you were referring to." She had certainly heard them, but it didn't matter to her. What someone did in their personal time was their own and she wouldn't judge. She knew how close she was with her father and understood the need to keep the family you do care about nearby. "I don't even know if my parents knew of those rumors if it would make a difference. They would probably brush it off as silly school nonsense."

"That would be the best option for you," Amycus said, staring out over the water. "I am so glad to hear that I am preferable to Lucius in some regard," he added mildly. He knew that Cissy and Lucius were together again but he wasn't going to tell Adelaide that. For whatever reason she hadn't made it public knowledge and it wasn't his place to tell anyone.

"And here I was thinking that there might actually be someone in this school who hadn't heard what a degenerate I was," he told her with a wry chuckly. "I'd be surprised if they didn't. At least two of them have reached my family in Greece," he told her. And they knew that at least one of them was actually true. "So if rumors won't stop this, and we don't want to ruin each other's reputations. And you're point blank refusing the only other who'd match my lineage, if not better it, where does that leave us with our little problem?" he asked, finally turning to look at her.
