Who: James and open to all Gryffindors
What: Holding a meeting about a new idea of his
Where: Gryffindor common room
When: Thursday night, after dinner
Status: Incomplete
Rating: PG

James got comfortable on the big sofa in the room, rummaging through some of his day's notes before sighing and carelessly tossing them aside. He just couldn't concentrate when his thoughts kept returning to the same stream of situations and sights that he couldn't do a bloody thing about. He had been entirely serious about what he'd written to his mates in his journal. Since the Diagon Alley event, he'd thought more about what they could be doing that wasn't already happening in school. His dad gave him enough insight into the situation within the Ministry that he started to feel uneasy about just being in school and being unable to do anything that would affect the outside world. At least, till now. So, he'd called to his mates and felt them out, hoping that they'd hop onto his idea and help to bring others aboard. After all, the worst thing that would come of his idea would be a small club that met and talked about issues. But the best case scenario? A full-out organisation dedicated to protecting themselves and their loved ones.

Motivation and determination returned to him and he got up, looking around the common room and noting the few students milled around. With a deep breath, he made a mass announcement in as commanding a tone as he was capable:

"YOU LOT! Who's tired of the tripe that went down in Diagon Alley? Who here's worried that it won't end there?!" Feeling the rush of adrenaline, he looked at everyone in turn, hoping to catch a spark in their eyes, and perhaps even a few who would readily come to his call with their concerns.

Lily usually didn't work on her homework in the common room, finding it too loud and busy to concentrate. Tonight seemed to be different however as the Gryffindors poured in after dinner. She decided to stay and brave the attempts of others sitting by her instead of chancing the library. She and Severus had had one too many run in's there and since their last journal conversation...well, she didn't want to take any chances.

She was finishing up her conclusion paragraph on a Potions assignment when the quiet of the evening was disturbed by James' salesman's pitch. She looked over, at first annoyed, and then interested. Of course she was one who did not agree with what had happened, who thought it a little too suspicious that the Ministry so easily brushed it aside. But what was she going to do about it? Write them a letter and complain? Yes, that was going to do a lot wasn't it? Still, there was something about James' tone that held her attention.

"So what if we are?" she finally called out. He had certainly caught everyone's attention, but they all seemed to be lacking a tongue. "What do you propose we do?"

Sirius wasn't sure how he felt about this at all. On the one hand, he loved the idea of taking arms and fighting head on, bringing down the pureblood gits and all they stood for. It was thrilling, and Sirius loved to be thrilled.

On the other hand, this just pointed out how bad things seemed to be getting. It wasn't just rumors and a few nutters, not if what James said were true. And that meant... Honestly, Sirius didn't like to think what that meant.

Didn't mean he wasn't going to be there to support his best mate though. So when Lily piped up he wasready.

"James has a plan Red, don't worry." James always had a plan, something Sirius was continuously grateful for.

Remus had hoped to speak to James first, to listen to what he had to say and help him formulate a plan everyone could understand and get behind, rather than him just get up and blather on about something without really having an end result in mind. But James was more clever than most, despite what others might thing, and Remus had faith in him.

Sitting next to Sirius, he looked up from his book and closed it, knowing this was the time for the big announcement. Lily had spoken up, as did Sirius in defense of James. Remus still didn't quite know where James was going with his plan. At that point, it was still mostly just reiterating what some of them had said in their journals. He glanced at Sirius, then up at James to listen to what he had to say.

Giving a little mental cheer at the support he got from Sirius, and even surprised that Lily would be publically curious about his idea, James grinned and prepared to get on his soap box. Taking another look about the room, he noted the rapt attention from most.

"You can bet Merlin's bollocks that I have a plan. I know it doesn't seem like it now, but this could get a lot worse really fast. It's a Muggleborn who was attacked, got it? That means that a number of you," his eyes trailed over Lily and a few others, but then returned to her face as though he were speaking directly to her, "are at risk, and I don't know about anyone else, but I won't stand by and let that happen to anyone I know and care about." Giving her a genuine, heartfelt smile, he turned back to everyone else and then glanced over at Sirius, giving him the thumbs up in thanks for his support.

"So what I'd like to propose is that we take the initiative and start here, at Hogwarts, where we can prepare ourselves. If you think about it, a load of us aren't far from graduation, which means we'll be out in the real world soon. Who's to say the next attack won't be on us? Or on any student that visits Hogsmeade? Diagon Alley is a hot spot for all sorts of Wizarding kind, but so is Hogsmeade, and it's a bloody lot closer to us. We need to take our defence into our own hands and practise whenever, wherever we can." The tone of his voice steadily rose as he got more and more pumped about what he was saying. He truly believed in his words and he hoped that he could infuse some of the others with his conviction.

Lily wanted to stick her tongue out at Sirius, but decided that was a little too childish, even for him. Instead, she caught Remus' eye and raised her eyebrows. If he was going to allow James to speak, perhaps they had already spoken about it in private and it may even be a good thing.

She turned her attention back to James, taking in what he was saying. Her heart did a little flip as he turned to look at her and she couldn't help but glance at Sirius when his eyes slid away. Ever since her conversation with him in the journal, she had been a little more aware of James and his tendencies towards her. She had thought Sirius was just playing a trick on her, but she was beginning to reconsider.

"Then what are you actually implying?" she asked. "For us to practice our dueling more? We already have one dueling club, do we need another?"

"Glad you asked, Evans," he replied to Lily, reverting to her surname for the sake of her appearances. He wasn't always a prat, after all. "Thing is, our Head Boy is a pureblood supremacist git and I feel like it'll just be a matter of time before he tries to push those bloody ideas on other students and clubs, and maybe even Professors. It was already hushed up before it could get out, but this wasn't the first attack like this." He paused for effect, looking to his mates for encouragement, to make sure that they thought what he was saying and intended to do was the right thing. It wasn't typical of James to question himself, but in such an important situation, he needed the support of his very best mates.

A few murmurs and some whispered conversations started after his last sentence, and even a few disbelieving looks were tossed his way. But James didn't back down. Looking seriously at all of them, he raised his voice an octave and added: "Some of you know that my dad works in the Ministry, and I've been hearing things about a similar kidnap and attack that happened just before this one, so you lot need to be aware that it's already starting to turn into a trend." It honestly wasn't that often that James would spew his thoughts like this so publically, but he desperately wanted to do something about this and make the truth known. It was closer to him than anyone might have thought, as he again passed a fleeting look over to Lily.

Sirius could see that James was floundering a little, and it was more than a little strange. James never needed confirmation of his ideas... Looked like some best friend back up was needed.

"James is right!" Sirius jumped up and stood next to James. "Who knows what the Hell is going on out there, but I for one don't see any way extra defense could be a bad thing. In dueling club we learn to play by the rules, but do you think that pack of nutters is going to stand back and take turns when it comes to an all out fight? You think Jelly Legs will save your arse when it's on the line? We need to know the real stuff, the stuff the other side knows. And believe me, they do." He took a deep breath, wondering if this was a good idea, then decided that he'd never cared about that before so why start now... He lifted his shirt, revealing mottled, indented scars running from his chest down below the waist band on his trousers, and the words Traitor branded into his skin just above his navel.

"They know more than you can possibly imagine, and they won't hesitate to use it."

James stood quietly by his mate's side while he revealed a very intimate fact about himself, in the way of show and tell. His resolve hardened that much more and as he placed a hand on his mate's shoulder in thanks, he gave it a little squeeze before letting go and getting back to his speech, facing the suddenly more attentive room.

"So you see, it's not just little kids with toys that we're dealing with. This is dark magic that maybe a handful of you have even heard of. And you can bet those bloody Slytherins and blood purists know many more than all of us combined. What'll it be then? Stand around like bloody sheep, waiting to be picked off because we associate with Muggleborns, or that we care about their safety? Or are we going to defend ourselves?"

James's eyes held a fire that burned bright and hot enough to sear anyone nearby. He noticed a few students nodding along with him, knowing that he'd at least captured a few people with the reality and darkness of the situation. Again his eyes flitted to Lily, wondering if she'd go along. James was so worried for her... he couldn't think sometimes, when he let his mind wander about the two attacks.

Remus sat quietly, listening as James spoke and addressed the crowd of Gryffindors. What his spectacled friend had to say really did carry some weight of value. The world was growing darker by the day, and Remus didn't know if everyone could feel it or if he was just inclined to feeling darkness because of what he was, but something just felt wrong. Things weren't right in the wizarding world, and right now they were all just sitting ducks, waiting to see what was going to happen. James' proposition suggested they take a stand, so they at least had a fighting chance to avoid becoming the subject of dishonest articles in the Daily Prophet.

His attention perked even more when Sirius jumped up to join James in speaking to the crowd. Remus sucked in a sharp breath as Sirius revealed a rather intimate detail about himself, and he felt a tug at his heart, knowing all the hell his best mate had gone through living in that house.

This was around the time when Remus would jump in and curtail the two of them out of whatever outlandish scheme they were trying to pull off, but this time when he stood it wasn't to put a stop to what they wanted to do. "What we've learned in our textbooks doesn't even begin to cover the curses and countercurses being used out there," he said, and gestured out the window. "But the information is out there for us to learn. It's not easy magic, but if we work hard and practice, I think we can teach ourselves."

Sirius' heart leapt up into his throat as Remus stood up and joined them. He suddenly felt stronger, more sure of himself. If Remus agreed then it must be a good idea. He let his shirt slowly drop and wondered briefly what the werewolf had thought when he exposed those scars. He'd never told the other boy, the only people who had ever seen them were James and Mrs. Potter, and that had been when they were still raw and oozing blood. He suddenly found that he cared a whole hell of a lot what Remus thought about them, but quickly pushed the thought away.

"Yeah," he slung an arm around Remus' shoulders in a casual gesture of affection. "And if Remus here is teaching you know it'll be good!"

Peter had gone to the Library early that morning, in hopes of catching up on some much needed studying, as he knew he would get nothing done if he confined himself to the Common Room.

He had only just finished, which was why he arrived unexpectedly into what seemed to be a meeting, something that he slowly realized had nothing to do with Quidditch or the up coming game.

This was what James had mentioned doing not long before. Standing off to the side, he watched his close-knit group of friends speak, other Gryffindors gathering in a small circle around them.

For the moment, he only inched closer, moving more near to where James and the other Marauders stood. It seemed that whatever idea that James had come up with was being readily accepted, even by Remus...

"If..." His voice was quiet, squeaker then usual, however Peter cleared his throat, twisting the strap of his book bag in between his hands, forcing himself not to stumble over his own words as he continued.

"If this is about what happened to Clearwater..." He kept his eyes on James as he spoke, an attempt to ignore all the others in the room. "I'm in."

James smiled widely as each of his mates backed him up, and offered their own ideas for this grand scheme. Remus getting on board was a pretty big deal and he knew that many more Gryffindors would be swayed if one of the most intelligent members of their House was backing this plan.

Surprised to hear Wormy's voice squeaking to the forefront, he nonetheless welcomed the final puzzle piece to the Marauder group with a wave to indicate that he should get closer to the centre of the circle forming about them.

"Petey here's got some great sense. So you filthy lot, what'll it be? Shall we strike up a society and actually learn some useful things that we can combat that," he waved toward the vicinity of Sirius's scars, "sort of magic with?" And with that, he reached backward toward his earlier pile of parchment, lifting up a blank roll and feeling around for a quill. Cursing when he couldn't find one, he leaned across Sirius to ask Remus, looking right silly in front of this crowd, having to ask for a bloody quill.

A familiar heat crept across his cheeks when Sirius threw out that they'd all be in good hands with him teaching. Remus hadn't really thought it through to that point, though, the blushing was more on account of the arm around his shoulders than anything else. He was used to such affection, but it still made him feel incredibly shy.

The scars that Sirius had revealed most definitely shocked him, but he did not want to react too much, as it would take away from the moment they were going for in all this. Peter's voice made him smile as well. Knowing Peter as he did, he knew how difficult it was for him to speak up at times.

Always one to be prepared, he reached behind him and snatched a quill from his shoulder bag. With a smile, he offered it to James.

He hesitated for just a moment longer before taking a step forward at the motion from James. His cheeks burned slightly, as he stood by his friends, before his fellow Gryffindor's.

His hands continued to twist the strap of his bag, eyes falling to the red carpet that lined the surrounding area's floor.

Only briefly, and towards the other Marauders, did Peter raise his eyes from the floor. Watching, to see just what it was that James had up his sleeve.

Lily had to admire the band of friends that stood up for each other. While she had always viewed them as a bunch of immature boys, they really pulled together when it came to something they believed it. She watched as Sirius stood up with James, showing a very intimate part of his life with the rest of the common room. Her eyes grew wide as the whispers grew louder around her. If anyone knew of the dangers of the pureblood society, Sirius seemed to know first hand.

Her eyes followed Remus as he was the next to stand with his friends. It was probably then that her mind started to turn towards their group that they wished to form. She had always sensed that Sirius and James were quick to make rash decisions, but Remus always seemed to think things through before jumping at chances. The ideas and logic behind it did make sense...

Peter seemed to sneak in from nowhere, but he stood with his friends as well. Lily was impressed to see him make his way towards them. He had always seemed the more timid of the group and she was happy to see he would be apart of the group too. She looked around the common room at the other students. Some were exchanging looks, whispering in groups. Others were turning back to their activities or homework and only a few seemed to be taking them seriously.

Lily closed her book and stood up, walking over to where the Marauders stood. "Count me in," she said, glancing at all of them, her eyes lingering on James. She had seen the way he kept looking at her during his speech and she quickly looked away as someone handed the quill to her. She bent over to scratch her name on the parchment.

"So when is the first meeting?" she asked, her eyes going back to James.

Pleased that at least a few students had taken them seriously, James started passing round the parchment entitled 'Gryffs 4 Justice' along with Remus's borrowed quill. When Lily spoke up, he smiled widely at her and looked to his mates for confirmation. They hadn't actually discussed all of the details, after all. It was mostly a whim that... well, sort of happened.

"Er, I s'pose we'll have to figure that out pretty fast. But probably on weekends when we're not in Hogsmeade or playing Quidditch, yeah? During the week we need to be practising to annihilate other teams." He'd said it so seriously that he almost forgot it was Lily who was speaking to him, and that she actually seemed genuinely interested in his opinions. All of a sudden, he wasn't his charming, confident self. A very slight pink tinged his cheeks and he turned to his mates, clearing his throat before he spoke up.

"I think... er, that's a wrap then, is it? Moony, d'you mind hanging on to that sheet? Y'know I'll bloody lose it in the abyss of my trunk."

Somehow he knew he was going to be the one in charge of the parchment as soon as James took it out. He didn't mind, though. James was right; he probably would lose it otherwise. Remus took the parchment and quill back after it was passed around and tucked it into his shoulder bag for the time being. He'd find a more secure place for it later.

His eyes flickered back to Sirius then, afraid he might be feeling a bit vulnerable after exposing such a private detail about himself. Remus stood at his side as things began to wind down. He was proud of James for speaking up, wanting to take a stand about something other than playing pranks.

"We can put the word out once we come up with a strategic time and place to meet," he said, to reiterate what James was trying to say in conclusion.
