Sometimes all it takes
is a walk round the lake
to ease your mind
The past few days had been enough to put the likes of Severus Snape in a good enough mood that much of Slytherin gave him odd looks, wondering what the hell had happened. He was still snarky and mostly unapproachable, but something in the way that he walked, no longer stalking or hunching as though he was fighting against the wind. More neutral expressions that weren't scowling or sneering at anyone. A lighter intonation when he talked to others. Even Slughorn noticed it, commenting that he must have won a massive Quidditch bet, before going on to ramble about this player and that whom he knew.
In reality, things were far better for him than he had hoped. Severus had thought about Narcissa's visit long and hard, many times, even scribbling notes to himself about his recollections beyond the haze of alcohol. He knew it wouldn't last — how could it possibly — but he held on all the same, letting himself enjoy the sensations. While they hadn't been open about their new status, mostly because Severus wanted to spare her the ridicule and disgusted looks which she would no doubt receive, he seemed more at ease when she was around, or when her name was mentioned. He hadn't uttered a word of this to Lucius yet, hoping that his friend would simply find out when it had fizzled out in time. Right now, all he could think about was how light his chest had been feeling, finally being given a chance at slight joy since events with Lily. It still stung, as he recalled her holding Potter's hand — enough. He shook his head, turning to look at Narcissa beside him, her hand held firmly in his, and he squeezed, allowing himself a small smile.
"This was an excellent idea. The lake looks marvellous with the sun setting above." Severus spoke in hushed tones, leaning down to whisper closer to her ear, almost as though they might be heard. He savoured the little rush that went through him.
