It all seemed like a very long time ago, but Max had to remember it had only been a night. Less than 18 hours ago she had been trekking through New York, her massive hunting knife strapped to her thigh and both guns holstered on her hips; that made her feel like a cowboy. Her pack was full and her massive German Shepherd was trotting a few paces ahead, nose up as his orange-brown eyes suddenly looked ahead.
At this point, Gunna always knew best, he snarled and lunged forward running full force before launching off the ground and landing on a shrieking infected who was ripping at the dog with his hands as he fell. Gunna had a good grip on what had been a man’s shoulder. Her job was easier, point and shoot. The gun was too loud, it could easily make others come. So, they ran one turn, two turns, they slowed a few minutes later and Max pulled out a can of Vienna sausages. She split it with the dog as they walked. Gunna always got half of everything.
It wasn’t long after that she was ambushed or it felt like an ambush anyway. Gunna didn’t like it but they weren’t infected so he just barked and strained at the end of the worn leash Max clipped him to once she realized that they weren’t going to try to attack her. The straining was all for show, but it was a very good show.
When they brought her back and took most of her stuff, and gave her some work she accepted it. After all, it would be nice to be around other people for a while. The last time she had tried to be in a group it hadn’t worked out at all, but this seemed a bit different. She had heard their radio broadcast, so it was only a matter of time. She just hadn’t expected to be FORCED into coming.
And now? She was talking to herself, muttering random facts as she threw a bone that looked suspiciously like a femur and watched the red sable Shepherd charge after it, snatch it out of the air or off the floor and run back.
