He hadn’t known what to expect from her, since he really never knew what to expect from her when it came to her getting glimpses of his many flaws. She hadn’t even started scratching the surface yet, so he had to wonder if she was going to scream at him the moment they were no longer in public, or if she was going to give him the cold shoulder and wait for him to apologize.
When they got into the car, Jesse shut the door and slouched down in the passenger seat, staring out the window. Catching sight of his own reflection in the side mirror made him cringe, and he shut his eyes as his fingers combed through his hair, pushing it from his face. Her question brought his focus back to her, and he thought about it for a second before he turned to look back out the window.
“Home.”
His voice was barely audible, mostly due to exhaustion, but he didn’t have to speak very loud in the small confines of her car. He could get his car that night when he needed to go to work, but for now he just wanted to figure out how he was supposed to tell her he was sorry without her thinking that he was just saying the words to say them, not really meaning them.
