Lucy stopped dead, her mind failing to make the connection to the familiar sounding voice and the man she was sure was avoiding her. She must have wrecked things pretty damn badly for him to skip out entirely on any of the sweet treats the diner had to offer, either that or he was getting his fix delivered via white bakery bags they used for to-go orders. Either way, she knew she'd messed up something awful which was why her brain took a minute to process the cheerful-sounding voice.
It was too late to recover entirely, but she pasted on a cheerful smile like she would dealing with most anyone but family. She really hadn't been paying attention to her surroundings. There was something about the self-defense classes that had her focused yet contemplative. She knew she should work on that awareness of surroundings, but there were days when shutting things out felt a lot safer.
Lou even waved back as she started tentatively towards Gus, wary and uncertain what was going on. "Hey," she said back when she got closer. She almost asked him how his kids were, but she wasn't sure if she was allowed to do that right now. Without following it up with something, she felt awkward in her silence.
