He caught that she'd been stalling a bit on her cookie, and the um was another tell, but Gus didn't really know how to end the visit. Gus liked having her over, sure, but anything two 'friends' might do were too closely associated to what two people who were dating might do. Have beers, watch movies, hell, even shooting the shit got personal after awhile. Gus liked Lucy, but she was in her twenties and something of a self-professed eternal bachelorette. He wanted to keep her firmly filed under friend, maybe with the asterisk 'surrogate daughter' at the most.
He returned with fresh hot chocolates for both of them, offering her a lame smile when he returned.
"I'm going to tell you this in confidence," he said with a smirk, "I haven't had anyone inside this place since I moved here. You're the first. Guess I'm a little rusty at entertaining."
If that didn't speak volumes about what he was going through (or putting himself through, a little more accurately), nothing did.
