In the mood for something new

Work - home, work - home, work - home... the perfect recipe for boredom burnout. Generally, Ciara was fine with the arrangement, with the quiet life she'd made for herself. Her involvement with HASK, the constant risk of exposure, and the stress of worry if she did the right thing were usually more than enough excitement for the typically low-key witch. But not tonight.
She'd been antsy all day, barely able to concentrate on the prosaic tedium that was her normal workaday life. The events of last night had awakened something in her. A drive, a need, a hunger for more. Had it not been for the powerful tonic she had taken to combat her migraine, she would not have slept at all Wednesday night. As it was, she slept like a rock, and woke full of nervous energy. It buzzed through her veins like an electric current.
The battle monopolized her every thought. At first, from the way her body behaved, she’d thought it was the fight itself that had her so worked up. That was only a part of it. That she had used her power, to such an intensity, was new, and exciting; a thrilling promise of more to come. She’d had no doubts of her abilities, but this had been the first time they’d been used to such magnitude.
And then there was the reality of the races working together, alongside humans, toward a common goal, against a common enemy. That, of all the facts of the night, was the most exhilarating of all. It changed everything. Literally everything. What if, Ciara thought, what if humans and supernatural could coexist? What if, one day, they could be neighbors, out in the open, with neither having fear of the other? Was it a possibility? If last night were any indication, then it would certainly seem so.
But then, what of HASK? Had it already outlived it’s purpose? Had it been a mistake from the outset? No. She had made the right decision with the facts that were available at the time. The problem was, the situation had exploded out of control in such a way that none of them could possibly have seen coming.
“Are you going to buy that?” A merchant interrupting Ciara’s thoughts. Well, to be fair, she had been fingering the scarf for an inordinate amount of time. “I… no. I think not,” she answered, after taking a closer look. “The color’s all wrong.” Ciara wasn’t one to be intimidated, even when she wasn’t necessarily in the right. “Maybe next time,” She placated. “Thank you for your time. Enjoy your evening.” The shop owner smiled and waved as Ciara stepped across the threshold of the open door, out onto the red brick that paved Church Street.
She smiled. It seemed the storm had moved on This strange day was turning into quite the glorious evening.
