Damon had tried not to be selfish with Elena, which was entirely rare for him. He was selfish by nature, but at some point he had taken a step back from pursuing Elena because he knew that he didn't deserve her, and Stefan did. He was still selfish in ways, but Elena made him want to try not to be selfish.
Damon had spent his entire life being told that he wasn't good enough, that he was a disappointment, and when you heard something enough you started to believe it. It had started with his father, then Lexi had told him he couldn't be around Stefan, even Stefan had told him that he hadn't deserved Elena, but she believed that he did, and he was determined to live up to that.
Damon would do anything for Elena, anything that meant she stayed alive. Anything other than something that put her in danger and he would gladly throw himself in the line of fire to keep her safe and alive and that was also something that was rare for him.
Damon was glad that she had lightened up since she had first entered his room and cried against his shoulder. Maybe he could do something right after all.
She shifted into his lap and he smirked at her. Putting his arms around her in a blur of speed he had them sitting on what was now their bed and he leaned in, kissing her fiercely, his hands moving to her ass and groping it. He wanted to celebrate this moment with her, the moment that she was back and he knew without a doubt that she loved him. And he hoped that she was okay with that.
