She paused with her hands under Violet's arms, prepared to pick her up and sit her in her lap for a while when Lily heard her husband's voice. She beamed at him, now caught between taking the baby with her and leaving her there, which was a poor plan except that James was probably not prepared to kiss her while she held a baby he didn't know. And she did need it.
Selfishness (and probably bad parenting) won out.
"You found us!" She shifted Violet back into the middle of the cushion and ran to James's side. He looked... like James. Certainly a bit younger than the last time she'd seen him on the island, but this was a James she remembered, closer to the one she'd left behind when she'd disappeared from her father's car than she had ever seen since. A moment later, her arms wrapped around him and peering up into his face, the baby very much not forgotten on her cushion, Lily asked, "Did you miss me?"
