Maybe a Little Complicated Who: Kenzie and Skylar When: Evening Where: The greenhouse
Kenzie stayed with Lance for most of the day, dozing off beside him, then hovering and trying to make him eat. It was nightfall when she began to get restless, having been coped up all day with her cousin. So she showered, piled her hair on top of her head, reapplied her make up, and set out for an adventure. Or at least a walk, since it seemed like adventure inside the dome was dodging death. It occurred to her after walking around a bit that it had been a couple days... she thought... since Kenzie saw Skylar at the park. With a destination in mind, Kenzie bought an empty cup from the guy at Eatzy's, then walked to the bar to get a drink. She poured the alcohol into her drink cup from the diner, complete with a top and a straw, and then began the trek to the greenhouse, sipping at her drink the entire way.
When she got there, she wandered inside, her straw between her lips as she began to look around for any sign that he might be there. Skylar was in the back room of the greenhouse, tending to his cash crop. After making up with Clementine, he'd spent the afternoon with her, just sitting close and being close. He still wasn't sure where there landed exactly, but at least they'd agreed to stop doing the things that upset the other. After that it had been the greenhouse nonstop, harvesting the pot plants he kept locked away. He heard the door open, abandoning his work for the moment and heading into the main greenhouse. Seeing Kenzie had him freezing, not sure what to do.
When Skylar entered the greenhouse, Kenzie grinned around the tip of the straw that she had been chewing on. Since he was there, she walked a few more feet and then took another sip from her cup. "You look scared to see me," Kenzie stated, reaching out to touch one of the plant leaves.
Yes. That was exactly it. Clementine's rule was no more making out with Kenzie, which was easy to agree to with his hands on her hips and her agreeing to not being a chew toy for the sexy vampire. Now that it was just Kenzie, Skylar was remembering the part where he liked making out with Kenzie. "No," he lied but kept his hands to himself. Just in case.
"No," Kenzie repeated, because it was such a simple response to her statement, and she arched a brow curiously. She swished some of the alcohol around in her cup and walked toward Skylar. "So then you're happy to see me."
"Sure. What can I do for you?" Maybe she was just here to buy a nice plant. That would be better. Easier. He kind doubted it though.
Kenzie's grin widened. "That's a loaded question, isn't it? I could think of a few things." Because no, she wasn't there to buy a plant. She didn't really know why she was there, but she knew she liked being there. "I told you before I might wander by your place, remember?"
And that was the problem. He did, oddly enough, remember that. "Um yes. So..hey?" Skylar remembered why she was there too. What that conversation had implied. But he was pretty sure that wasn't allowed either.
Pausing in front of him, Kenzie lifted her brows expectantly and waited for him to continue as she lifted her drink to her lips again. At least the alcohol was making her stomach feel nice and warm. A cigarette would have been amazing, but she had left the house without one.
"Right. So, you know Clementine right?" He asked her, rocking back a little.
Swallowing, Kenzie lowered her cup and shrugged. "Yeah?" It still didn't really occur to her where he might be going with this. Yes, she knew Clementine. Maybe they were friends. Kenzie didn't know for sure. She never really knew what anyone was to her other than Lance.
"Right. Good. Okay. Sooo..." Skylar took a step back, smiling a little. "She and I got in a fight. Because I didn't like this vamp...guy," he almost slipped up but caught himself. "This guy, he was all over her and I didn't dig it and apparently she wasn't a big fan of this." He waved between them. "So I said I'd stop of she stopped letting him bite her."
Drawing her dark brows together in slightly confusion, Kenzie studied Skylar as her brain worked around what he was saying. "So you were jealous of her with another guy. How did she even know about this?" Kenzie asked, using the cup to motion back and forth between them, but like he had. She hadn't told Clementine she was kissing on Skylar, had she?
"I wasn't... Maybe a little." Maybe that was part of it. The other part was that Mannix was a vampire and Clementine was nice and not a snack. "She saw. At the festival."
At the festival. Was there a festival? It took Kenzie a moment to remember the park. And the bracelet she stole. But if Clementine had seen Kenzie kissing Skylar, wouldn't she have asked Kenzie about it before telling Skylar not to do it anymore? Hadn't she thought that make Kenzie liked kissing him? "I guess maybe we aren't friends, then," Kenzie mused out loud. And she supposed she had been right when she told Lance she had no one else but him. Kenzie's gaze cleared and snapped back up to Skylar's face. "Okay. So... you don't want me around anymore."
"Who us? We're friends." Skylar didn't see that correlation at all. At her question he shook his head. "No, just...not the other thing."
"I meant her," Kenzie corrected, though it hardly mattered. At least not to her. She rallied then, determined not to be disappointed or even hurt. No one was allowed to hurt her. Kenzie took another sip of her drink and then glanced around. "You mean you don't want to kiss me anymore." Because he kept dancing around specifics and she didn't understand why.
"Clementine? Why wouldn't she be?" Skylar asked, looking at her and frowning. That didn't seem to make sense really. Shaking his head, he looked back at her, though he'd started pacing a little. "No, not that I don't want to; I said I wouldn't." Because he did still want to.
"Well... If she saw us kissing, and maybe me and her were friends, then I think she maybe would have thought I liked you. And then, if she was my friend, she wouldn't have told you not to kiss me, right?" Kenzie's brows drew together thoughtfully. It made sense to her but there was the possibility she had it all backward. "Is she your girlfriend now?"
Skylar's brow furrowed in confusion. That didn't make sense to him. "I don't know," he answered, voice slow. Shaking his head. "No. I don't think. She didn't say that so, no." That seemed safest to him. Plus, he wasn't really the boyfriend type.
"She's not your girlfriend, and you want to kiss me but you can't because she asked you not to." Kenzie paused to think that over. "So you're making it so that she doesn't hang out with some guy, and she said she wouldn't as long as you didn't kiss me. Okay, I guess." She shrugged even if it didn't make sense to her. "Then we won't kiss anymore. Or fuck, even though I was looking forward to that part," Kenzie added with a sly smile.
"She can hang out with him I guess. he just can't bite her." Skylar frowned because when Kenzie worded it like she did, it sounded a little silly. Especially when she said that last part. That had sounded like fun. "Well...yeah. Sorry." He looked a little bummed about it.
Kenzie shrugged. "I'll just find someone else to kiss I guess." She paused and blinked as she processed the word bite. "Bite? Like a vampire?"
That was a bit of a bummer. Then she caught him in his words and he visibly stumbled. "Uhh, no...do you know about them?" he asked, narrowing his eyes at her. He told Zania he would keep it quiet, but that meant keeping who she was quiet right?
"Maybe." Kenzie eyed him, wondering if he was talking about Mannix. "Do you know about them?" That made sense. Maybe. He didn't want Clementine getting bit by some guy. Mannix was the only male vampire she knew, but that didn't mean there weren't others.
Skylar bounced on his feet a little. "Maybe yeah," he said. "Sounds like it's a thing now." He chewed on his lip a little.
"Uh huh." Yeah, vampires were definitely a thing. And she knew why Clementine might have wanted to get bit by one, because...yeah. Kenzie was more than happy with the arrangement she made with Mannix. After another long pull from her straw, Kenzie tilted her head curiously. "So, you didn't want Clementine getting bit by a vampire... so she made you promise not to kiss me anymore in order to for her to stop?"
Skylar knew what Kenzie was thinking. He'd been there. It was definitely good. And he hoped Zania didn't bring anything up about what had happened when she bit him. That wouldn't go over well with Clementine either. "Um...yes."
Kenzie arched a brow before she shrugged one shoulder nonchalantly, sliding the straw slowly in and out of the cup holder. "It's like she took your concern for her and used it to get what she wanted... which was to make you stop doing something you didn't want to stop doing. That wasn't very fair, I don't think, especially if she's not your girlfriend. 'Cause getting bit by vampires is far worse than kissing another girl, I think."
Skylar opened his mouth, then made a face. "I hadn't thought about that." He'd been thinking about the fact that he wanted Clementine to stop letting Mannix bite her. "Now I'm confused."
"That was probably the point," Kenzie said simply. "Girls like to confuse boys. Get them all fuzzy in the head. That way they always get what they want. And so she doesn't offer her neck out to a vampire, big whoop, and you have to stop being around other girls if it upsets her. Not really a fair trade, if you ask me." She lifted the cup, offering it to Skylar with both brows raised. "You want some?"
That wasn't really a fair trade was it? He hadn't thought about it like that, but after a moment he was reaching for her cup to take a sip. It was stronger than he would have liked, but he got enough of a hit before handing it back. "So...now what?"
She shrugged and took another sip for herself. Kenzie was buzzing quite nicely at this point. "I don't know. I guess now Clementine is safe from vampire bites, and you and I don't get to kiss anymore. Unless you think I could have a last kiss, kiss. That would be nice."
Skylar stared at her for a moment. “Just...one last kiss?” Because that did seem reasonable to him. And he wanted to kiss her.
"Yeah. I think it's only fair, isn't it? Because it sounds like Clementine is making you her boyfriend. You can't kiss me, and then what if there's another girl? You won't be able to kiss her either." Kenzie smiled as stepped in closer to him. "One last kiss. And then I'll go find someone else who wants to kiss me and you'll be off the market."
“She didn’t say that part,” Skylar said about the girlfriend thing. He didn’t move back when Kenzie stepped closer. “Just one,” he said holding up his finger. He wasn’t jealous about her kissing other guys, but he didn’t want to hear about it either.
"Does she have to say it? What does it mean when you're not allowed to kiss other people?" Kenzie reached out to curl her fingers in his shirt before pushing up lightly on her toes. "Just one. Promise."
“I kinda of thought she would have said it.” Skylar remembered he liked her hand on his shirt. Quite a bit. “Promise.”
She made a small noise of acknowledgment in her throat before closing her eyes and lifting her face to press a soft kiss against his lips. She really did like kissing him. It was a little disappointing that she had to stop now.
Skylar liked it too. Even now he really liked it. She was fun, different and after a moment he was leaning in, kissing her just a little harder back. Might as well make the most of it right?
It made her feel a little better, knowing he obviously enjoyed it when they did this. At least Kenzie could walk away knowing it hadn't really been his choice. Just another reason she didn't like relationships. Way too restrictive. Kenzie parted her lips slightly to deepen the kiss, wanting to draw it out as long as she could.
Yeah, Skylar was lost, getting pulled in deeper with her, enjoying every second of it. This would definitely be missed. He wasn’t sure he had an opinion about the relationships thing, but what did he know? He’d never really been in one.
Kenzie kept Skylar's shirt clutched in her fist, in case he tried to pull back. But he was kissing her too and his lips were soft and he had the faint smell of her liquor on his breath. She liked every part of it, and pulled him closer.
Somewhere around that point, Skylar realized he shouldn’t have kissed her. His hands were around her waist, holding her closer. He really needed to stop because he was already sarting to want more.
Holding her cup was proving to be a major inconvenience because she couldn't wrap her arms around him the way she wanted. Kenzie slid her arm around his waist carefully. She was afraid if she stopped long enough to put the cup down on the ground, the moment would be lost.
This definitely need to end, but he wasn’t stopping, not just yet. He just kept kissing her, liking this. This was fun. And easy. It didn’t come with nearly as many feelings as being around Clementine did.
Kenzie liked fun and easy. She preferred things that lacked real emotion. It was always safer that way. Easier. Releasing her grip on his shirt, Kenzie brought her hand up to brush through his hair.
Skylar was thinking about lifting her up onto something when it clicked that he’d said one kiss. This was too big of a one. He pulled back a little, untangling himself from her with a shy smile.
Kenzie felt him pulling away, and she didn't resist, or cling. She let him go, lowering her heels back into the ground. Her lips were nice and tingly. Kenzie returned his smile with a small, faint one of her own. "Bye, Ace."
He felt himself frown, but wound up shrugging a little. “Bye.”
Because she wanted to, Kenzie kissed her fingers then touched his lips before giving him a wink and turning to leave the greenhouse. It would figure that she would get something interesting taken away from her. But that was life.
