Hello, neighbor!
Who: Kenzie and Clementine
When: Afternoon
Where: Clementine’s house
Warning: Convos about mild drug usage
The morning had been pretty fantastic after Kenzie left Skylar’s greenhouse with the pretty little package of weed in her hands. She sat outside of her house, rolling a joint and tapping her foot to a random tune that ran through her head seemingly on repeat. She took her time, savoring every pull, happy that her cousin wasn’t around to try and get her to share. By the time she finished, Kenzie thought that the dome was much more fun to be living in than she initially thought, and she decided to go out and visit, and maybe wander to the park to see what the festival thing was all about.
After hiding her new stash, Kenzie left the house. Her eyes were a bit red, but she was feeling quite nice and more than a little friendly. Truthfully, she wasn’t entirely sure how she ended up on Clementine’s doorstep, but it was a familiar house to her, because the blonde girl inside often came around the trader’s circle when Kenzie and her cousin and uncle were about, and Kenzie remembered she made things out of yarn. Pretty things that Kenzie sometimes had been willing to trade for. Plus, she was pretty and wore pretty things, and Kenzie had always been itching to get her hands on said pretty things so she could have them instead.
Tugging gently at a strand of her hair, Kenzie then knocked on Clementine’s door, almost immediately wondering how long she would have to be waiting outside.
Clementine hadn't expected anyone to come calling, but she hurried to the door as soon as she heard the knock. Wrapping a shawl around her shoulders, she opened it to see Kenzie and for a moment just had to stare while she processed.
"Kenzie, hi!" She said, smiling a little more when the fact that Kenzie was on her doorstep actually settled in her mind. "I didn't know you were in town. How are you? Would you like to come in?" There was something really familiar about that redness to Kenzie's eyes, but Clementine tried to push it off for now. Just because she looked the way Clementine did after smoking didn't mean that she somehow still had weed…though a trader might actually be the perfect person to get weed from.
"Hi." Kenzie smiled, feeling good enough to be friendly. She stepped inside Clementine's house, tugging at her hair again. "I got stuck here when the doors got stuck, so I can't leave just yet. Were you busy?" Not that Kenzie would really care if she had been, since Kenzie wanted to visit.
"Not really. Just crocheting," She said, starting them toward the living room. Standing near her seat, she watched Kenzie for a second. "You have a place to stay?" She asked, thinking that was definitely something she needed to find out. If Kenzie was stuck here, she needed somewhere to be. "Get comfy, I'll get you something to drink. Water?”
Crocheting. Kenzie didn’t think she could learn how to do that even if she wanted to. And she always pictured little old ladies sitting around with knitting needles and yarn whenever she thought about it. Which wasn’t all that often, to be honest. “I’m on Strawberry Lane,” Kenzie said, still smiling, even though her cheeks were starting to hurt. Would her face freeze this way if she kept it up? That was something to try out on a boring day. “For now, anyway. I don’t need anything to drink,” she added with a shake of her head. Rather than sitting, Kenzie began to wander a bit, looking around the room. “Are you going to the festival thing?” she asked, since she figured it was best to keep talking than to start picking up things to observe them more closely.
"We're neighbors then," Clementine said, smiling. It made more sense now that Kenzie was here if she had a place of residence on the same street Clementine did. "Yeah, I am. Figured it would be fun and a friend of mine asked me to bid on him. Are you? We could sit together, if you want," Clementine said, watching Kenzie for a moment before moving to sit in a chair facing her.
Neighbors? Oh, right! That was probably how she got there so quickly, even if it seemed kind of hazy. "Okay," Kenzie said, thinking it might be fun to sit there and watch boys get bid on. Fun and likely really funny, especially if she still felt any effects from the joint she’d smoked before visiting Clementine. Kenzie turned toward Clementine with a widening grin. She couldn’t seem to bring herself to sit, feeling too restless now to be stationary for very long. "Isn't it more fun to bid on boys who aren't friends? Then you can do things to them that you probably can’t do to boys who are just friends."
That had Clementine laughing. "Well, I think it would be fun to bid on anyone, really, but Lochlan asked if I would. I told him that I might, because mystery and all, but I'll probably bid on him anyway. Don't really know a lot of the other guys in this area and Lochlan's fun to be around. You could bid on him too, if you want. See who wins. He'd probably love that." She watched Kenzie, still little thoughts digging at the back of her mind. Why didn't she want to sit? And what, really, was making her eyes that red. And was it what she hoped it was all along?
Mystery. Was it mysterious if a guy asked to be bid on? Maybe he was afraid of getting stuck with someone he found unattractive. Men were pretty predictable like that. Kenzie laughed a little and tugged at the hem of her white shirt again. “I don’t know. I’d hate to disappoint your friend, or even scare him, by outbidding you,” she said jokingly, although she was maybe a little serious. “Might be fun to bid on someone though, I guess.” Rubbing at her eyes, Kenzie glanced around again. “Can I use your bathroom?”
"C'mon, you should bid on Lochlan too. I bet he'd think it was hilarious." Clementine looked back at Kenze, watching her mess with her shirt, and nodded. "Sure, go right ahead. Just over there to the left." She pointed in the direction of it, but still was watching her. "You ok?" She ended up asking, thinking she knew the answer already, hoped she did at least, but didn't want to let herself believe that the possibility of marijuana existed again if it wasn't true.
"Fine," Kenzie called over her shoulder as she headed in the direction of the bathroom. Once inside, she shut the door and turned on the sink. And they she looked around with mild interest. There were some knick knacks here and there, hand towels. It was cozy and nothing like the bathroom she had in her house. It wasn't that Kenzie was purposely looking for anything, but she was always curious about someone's living space. After splashing her face with water, she reached out toward one of the shelves, swiping a small bronze elephant. It was small enough that she slipped it into her pocket and pulled her tshirt down to cover the tiny lump it created in the denim of her skirt. Then she turned off the water and returned to the front room like nothing had happened. "When do you want to go? I think it'd be fun to bid on your friend with you. Is he cute?"
Clementine had stood up and gone to get herself and Kenzie a glass of water, coming back to sit on her chair again. "Anytime, really. Was just kind of hanging out here, so if you wanted to head out now, we totally could." Standing up again, she held out a glass. "Here. Wanted to get you some water anyway." She smiled more when she heard that Kenzie would bid on him too. SOmehow she felt that would make it more fun for Lochlan. Didn't everyone want more people to bid on them? "He is," She said, nodding. "And he's funny, which are both good things! You haven't met Lochlan yet? He works at his family's bar in town."
"I've been there a couple times, but never talked to anyone behind the bar." Kenzie tool the water and began to drink it down. It only took a few gulps before it was gone, and Kenzie wiped her mouth with the back of her hand before giggling. "If he works at a bar, that's a plus. And he's just your friend? Cute, funny guy with access to alcohol sounds like he ought to be high on your list to make more than a friend." The complications of relationships had always been something Kenzie avoided like the plague. Being tied down to one person sounded boring, but she knew not everyone had the same thoughts as her. Some people liked the restriction.
"We just met. And since when do you know everything about what I want?" She teased, looking back at Kenzie after putting her glass of water down on the table to see that her own was gone. Eying her, she stood up again. "You want a snack of something before we go?"
Kenzie shrugged, but smiled anyway. She also didn't understand the concept of putting a timetable on attraction. It was just another one of those normal protocols that most of society still followed, she supposed. "I don't know. But you're nice, and pretty, so I just thought you ought to have a nice, cute guy too." Lifting a brow, Kenzie found she was a little hungry. So she smiled and tilted her head. "What kind of snack?"
"Well, thank you, Kenzie," Clementine said, starting toward the kitchen with a smile on her face. "Whatever snacks you want, I guess. We have some fruit, want an apple?" She asked, peeking her head back into the hallway to check on Kenzie. "What'd you do today, before ending up here?"
Fruit. That was healthy stuff. Kenzie supposed it was better than nothing. "An apple is fine," Kenzie said. At Clementine's next question, she turned toward the other woman, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. "I smoked a joint. Why?"
With the apple out, she hurried closer to Kenzie and grinned. "I knew it! How do you even have anything to smoke? Did you bring it in with you? And why were you holding out on me this whole time?" She asked, eyes wide and bright with the possibility of maybe bartering for some of what Kenzie had.
Kenzie had no idea what to expect from Clementine but blatant excitement wasn't it. It prompted another loud giggle from Kenzie and she reached out to take the apple. "I bought it. And how am I suppose to know you like weed? That's like me knowing what kind of guy you're after, huh?"
"You bought it?" Interesting. She watched Kenzie and then leaned in a little closer, voice lower because she needed to keep herself quiet for Zania's sake. Since she slept during the day thanks to her night shift, Clementine wanted to be as respectful of that as possible. "Who'd you buy it from?"
"Ace. The greenhouse guy." Of course, he was Ace to her, because if Skylar had told Kenzie his real name, she certainly didn't remember. "Fifteen for a slice. Should make the auction more fun," she added with another laugh before taking a bite of her apple. "You seriously smoke?"
Ace. She need to meet this Ace and get herself a slice. And at fifteen for it, she was more than willing to pay. Seemed reasonable, especially for post-apocalypse prices. "I seriously smoke. Mom was prescribed it before the world went nuts, you know, and we'd smoke sometimes. I can't believe there's actually some here. I have to get some. We could smoke together sometimes too, once I have some."
After another bite of apple, Kenzie nodded. "Totally. Whenever you want." As long as she has her own. Weed cost money and Kenzie didn't like to share her own stash. "Certainly makes the dome much more tolerable. And I bet it'd make a date with a friend, or stranger, more interesting too, huh?"
"I guess it would, but I'm not sure getting high right before a date is fair, you know? Aren't you supposed to be on a date to get to know the other person? I wouldn't be paying attention to them then." But getting high just for the hell of it, whenever she wanted, that Clementine was definitely on board for. "I gotta find this Ace person."
"I guess." Kenzie shrugged. Getting to know people was hardly on her agenda. Why bother when she never stayed in one place? The dome would open soon and she would be on her way. "Just go ask for him at the greenhouse. Or if I see him at the auction, I'll point him out to you. And maybe I'll see Cody too. He's a ghost." Kenzie rubbed under her eye, smearing her eyeliner. "I'd bid on him if ghosts could join in."
"…what?" Clementine asked, wholly unaware that there were ghosts here. She'd been aware of rumblings about them a few days ago but there was a real, live ghost here? Or well..maybe not live but that wasn't the point, right? She'd gone from super pumped about the prospect of getting some weed to super confused about there being potential ghosts in the area that might want to join in on a bachelor auction.
"Ghosts," Kenzie repeated, as if it were common knowledge. "I've talked to at least one. His name is Cody. He's not scary, though I guess he looks it, with blood and everything. Can't touch him, but you can talk to him and everything."
Clementine just shook her head a little, trying to process this. “Ghosts, huh...” She repeated, shrugging after a moment. “I guess it makes sense, zombies and ghosts you know? Crazy. Maybe you can introduce me to him? I’d kinda...love to meet a ghost.” Standing up, she nudged her head toward the door. “Let’s get out of here? I’ll leave a note for Zania but we could head out now.”
Kenzie continued to devour her apple, unaware of how hungry she has actually been. She had to swallow another bite before answering. "I'll see if he wants to meet you. He's not uh, fond, of people." Was that the right word? It sounded like it. "And if you do meet him, don't be put off by what he looks like. He can't help it, I don't think." Turning, Kenzie headed for the door, the tiny elephant in her pocket all but forgotten at the moment.
Clementine nodded, heading over to a side table and scrawling out a note for her roommate. Then she started toward the door, noting what she’d said about Cody. “That’s fair. I’d like to meet him, though, if he wants.” Smiling still, she waited for Kenzie. “Time to go bid on some dudes!”
