No! No more cold! Damn the cold! Damn the McBeasty Bastard for keeping it cold. Damn all the keebler elves for living in trees and making cookies, where it was no doubt warm. Damn everyone outside the carnival who got to bask in toasty weather. Bah! Sarah was even less of a fan of the cold than the day before. She had to dig up some of her old clothes; she was wearing layers of shirts and a pair of pajama pants under her jeans. And she was still cold! She'd pulled on the thickest, heavy duty socks she owned. Still cold. She wrapped a colorful scarf around her head to keep the chill from biting her ears. How could she have possibly ever thought the cold wasn't so bad? She asked herself more than once if it was freaking worth it to be standing out there, manning the house of mirrors. How many people were even going to show up with that kind of temperature garbage going on? Was the Beast trying to turn people away? Because if Sarah was a visitor, she sure as hell wouldn't voluntarily be out there in such frosty air just to see funny mirrors or eat crappy carnival food. There were better things to do than sit on her stool while her buns slowly froze to the seat. At least she wasn't feeling as freaked out or anxious as she had the night before. Visiting Zeke had done her a world of good. Especially that chase around the living room! And the happy dance before that! Good times. It was too bad he didn't turn into an animal, like a cat or something. She would've procured a ball of yarn for him to play with. As long as it was soft and fluffy to the touch, he might still enjoy something like that just the way he was. Or not. Heck, she did. She'd bought yarn before just because she liked how soft it was, without any intention of crafting anything with it. Just to have it. Or maybe she should have brought some balloons to bat back and forth between them. That would've been fun too. For the first time in a long time, her thoughts briefly went to her family. For about half an hour, she actually had an internal debate on whether or not she should call them. She hadn't spoken to any of them in years... in fact, hadn't the last time been before she'd come to the carnival? Yes, it had been. Time had flown by! Of course, the internal debate never got further than it did any other time-- no contacting the family. She didn't need them coming out there to look for her. God forbid Jane got stuck there too. Ugh! And Caleb... kid had so much life ahead of him. Well, he wouldn't be a kid anymore, twenty-two that year and already old enough to drink. It was better to let them think she ran off, in her grief, and joined some nunnery or whatever (yeah, like that would ever happen). As the light began to ebb away, the cold grew in its place. By the time her nose turned red, Sarah had had enough. She hopped off her stool and closed the mirror house down for a little while, intent on taking her break in a warm place where she wouldn't see her breath in the air. Anywhere would do as long as it was not outdoors. |
