Week 35 - Thursday
Characters: Ana Kirke and kidnapper NPCs
Location: Kidnappers' camp
Summary: The kidnappers try to find out what they can expect from a hostage exchange
Rating: R for language
The night before had been one of the longest nights of Ana’s life. No one was meant to sleep handcuffed to anything and Ana was fairly sure she’d never suggest restraints to Drew ever again. It felt like she hadn’t slept at all and every muscle in her body was heavy and sore. Worse was the way every nerve felt on edge. She felt like her skin was peeling away in strips. The blindfold had been on for hours now and every second in darkness was one where her imagination filled the blackness was something terrible. Ana wanted to cry and what she really wanted was to go home.
The removal of the blindfold in the morning had been unexpected and Ana winced at the invasion of the light. She’d been walked to the bathroom on shaky legs and guarded while she used it. When her business was finished, Ana was surprised that she wasn’t locked and blindfolded back up. There were only two people - Ana didn’t know how to tell if that was good or bad - and she watched them warily.
“What - what do you want?”
“It’s alright, honey.” The woman had her mousy-brown hair pulled back in a ponytail. “We just need a few things from your friends, that’s all. Sorry for the tough night, but we didn’t know how you’d react.”
Ana bristled. “You left me chained to a fuckin’ pole.” How the hell did they expect her to react? They were the ones who’d stolen her away. Taken her from Drew.
“You didn’t expect us to tuck you in and read you a bedtime story did you?” The man snorted. “You had a rough night but you’re still alive and we haven’t harmed a hair on your head.”
“And you’re going to be home real soon,” the woman added, giving the man a firm look. “We’re just short a few important supplies that a group like yours would have. As long as they want you back, you’ll go back.”
“Or what? If you don’t get what you want, then what?” Ana didn’t believe that everyone back home would let her go but it seemed the obvious question.
The woman raised her eyebrows. “You don’t think they care enough about you, honey?”
“I didn’t say that.” Her tone was defensive.
“Then nothing to worry about.” The woman smiled. “But if you’re that concerned, we’d probably just have to leave you on the side of the road. It’s not cold out; you’d be fine. Though I don’t know if you’d want to go back to your friends.”
“Fuck you.” Even without Drew encouraging them, they would never do that.
“Now now, don’t be like that.” The man spared a look at the woman and turned his attention back to Ana. “We could always take you with us and trade you. A cute young thing like you, I’ll bet we could get a lot of trade goods if your friends don’t want you.”
Ana’s stomach twisted and her heart rate tripled at least. The anger in her voice was replaced by fear. She’d run if they weren’t armed. “They’ll meet you.”
“Good.” The man smiled at her, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes. “How do you think they’ll show up? Can we trust them not to come in guns blazing?” The woman gave him a sharp look but didn’t say anything.
Why on earth he expected Ana to honestly answer that question was beyond her. “We’re not - we’re not like that,” she lied. “We’re just farmers.” Not a chance in hell Ana was going to voluntarily tell them her leader was career military.
“Hmph. Guess we’ll see.” The man looked at her dubiously, but shrugged. “We’ve managed to get through this sort of thing before with everybody getting what they want. You play nice and that should happen again this time.”
