La Casa della Luna - Friday, September 14th, 2007
Nestled In a narrow cobblestone lane in the heart of Rome, La Casa della Luna is a boutique that deals in the occult. Pentacles, triquatras, and other pagan charms lie alongside crucifix adorned rosaries, and Holy Cards are displayed beside Tarot decks in the front window.
In the elegantly appointed front room, assorted ritual paraphernalia, amulets, and talismans are arranged artfully in antique display cases. Shelves are stocked with oils, jars of dried herbs, and an assortment of colourful candles that scent the room with the sweet aroma of beeswax.
A small alcove holds a marble altar dedicated to the Roman Goddess Carmenta, where a miniature crystal fountain serves to represent her presence. The surface of the altar is scattered with offerings of sweet smelling herbs and flowers. Next to a bowl of honeyed milk, sits an earthenware jar holding incense made from crushed Juniper berries and leaves of Bay Laurel, ready to scatter over the coals in a small brazier.
An arched doorway toward the back leads into a well lit room filled with bookcases, their shelves lined with books on every occult subject imaginable. A couple of armchairs and a coffee table sits off to one side, inviting prospective buyers to sit and read.
Mia, the owner of La Casa della Luna, lives in an apartment above the shop.
