"Hey," Darcy answered, at a loss for words. How's it going and What have you been up to since we got rid of our kid didn't exactly seem like good conversation starters -- and she was assuming Irv wanted to avoid the awkward small talk as much as she did.
"Uhm... so, I uh... got this phone call today," Darcy began, struggling to keep emotion out of her voice and stick with the facts. "Uh... from the Department of Children and Families..." She knew the name would strike a chord with Irv -- they'd dealt with them tons while trying to find the best home for Sunny -- and she tried to speak quickly so he couldn't get any questions in until she was done.
"They wouldn't tell me shit on the phone," she added, hoisting herself up onto the counter as she spoke. "But, uhm... well, they... need to talk to us. Both. Right away..."
