Wasn't she miserable when he got angry at her for everything? Wasn't she miserable when he told her that she shouldn't hang out with her friends? Hadn't she already tried to break up with him a couple of times? Hadn't she wished, quite a few times, that she was still with Benson? The answer to all those things was yes.
"Well..." she began. "Not ... really. But Benson, I've tried to break up with him before," she confessed, "and he's scary. I mean, maybe I'm just stupid, but ... he's mean. He doesn't just get mad, he flies off the handle. I thought he was going to hit me last time. And don't ask me why I'd want to stay with someone like that, because I don't know," she mumbled.
