Preparing to entertain a guest was more difficult than most people knew, especially when you wanted that guest to be horribly uncomfortable. Tea was too soothing, liquor just offered him the possibility of happiness and any food at all would allow him to cover nervous silences with chewing. Forget entertaining the queen. This is what they should write etiquette books about.
It had been a month since Pansy had spoken to Zacharais. A month since that drunk idiot had confessed that he was a gay. Twenty-nine days, actually, but who was counting? Not talking to Zacharias was harder than Pansy would have thought it would be, if she'd ever thought about such a thing. He wasn't Millicent or anything, but it was still difficult. She was used to having him around to fuss over and boss around, and she was used to worrying about that mess of a life he was living. A bigger mess than I'd known, apparently.
The problem with Zacharias was that he was a lying gay. If he'd just been a gay, she could have fixed him and been done with it. After all, I'm nothing if not supportive. But no - Zacharias had to lie about it, hide it from her and recruit other liars to lie for him. That was the worst part, as far as Pansy was concerned. Being Pansy Parkinson just didn't work if the disloyal bastards she called her closest friends were going behind her back to undermine her and teach social bottom-feeders like Bones that they didn't have to respect or even fear her. Pansy liked fear. She really hoped Zacharias was feeling it. If not, she decided, I'll just have to give him a reason to. With that, Pansy sat back to wait and plan.
