Who: Reyna Ramirez-Arellano & Nico DiAngelo
When: Monday, Jan 25, early morning
Where: Reyna & Nico's bedroom
What: An overexuberant ten year old demigod trips over his pjs and is very very very confused. Reyna tries to explain things. There are weapons and metal dogs.
The first thing Nico noticed when he blinked his eyes open was that the windows were gone. Westover Hall didn’t have many frills (aside all the antique weapons on display) but the slit windows at least broke up the stonework and provided an awesome view of the ocean far, far below. Instead the room was just dark. Not even cloudy with no moon dark. Just dark.
He waited for his eyes to adjust. Or at least adjust just enough that he could more safely bump his way around the room. Just slide off the bed and…
Thump. Bedside table. Thump scramble. Backpack. Thump clatter. End of bed and… was that a sword? Awesome!
He bumped into a partial wall, following it to the end and peeking around. Another bed. Someone in it. Dark hair and braid. Only one person that could be. Hurrying over, he let out a soft yelp as he tripped over his pjs (man, they seemed a little long) before finally scrambling onto the bed and poking the girl’s shoulder.
“Bianca. Bianca. Bianca. Something’s going on. It’s like a black-out, except it’s everything,” he hissed, not wanting to raise his voice too loudly in case one of the school staff was watching and would get them in trouble. “Can that even happen, Bianca? Eclipses don’t work that way, right?”
Reyna sat up quickly. Despite all the time she'd spent here, she still slept like a praetor, ready to jump at a moment's notice. Her hand went to imperial gold dagger, clutching it as she scanned the room for intruders.
"Nico? Nico, what's wrong? What happened?"
Nico teetered back, flopping down to sit on his butt. His eyes wide, he stared a good few moments. It was still dark, but he could see enough to know this wasn’t his sister. Plus the voice. Except she knew him. Maybe it was one of the other girls from the school…
His mind racing through the people they had met and trying to find a good name, he scowled and crossed his arms over his chest. “You’re not Bianca.”
"No, I'm not, Bianca's.. not here. And it's not an eclipse. It's like an adventure. I'm a friend of Bianca's and she's off on her own adventure so she asked me to watch you." Her brain was spinning fast. She didn't want to lie to Nico, but she couldn't tell him the whole truth about Bianca. Not right off the bat like this, maybe later. Depending on how things went.
"I'm Reyna." She loosened her grip on the dagger she held under the sheets and leaned over to turn on the light. "My sister's not here either. So, what do you say we stick together, huh? Have an adventure of our own?"
The scowl turned into a full out pout. “No way! Bianca wouldn’t go on an adventure without me! We’re always together.” But even as he said the words, doubt creeped into his expression. They weren’t actually always together. They had separate classes and all. Plus bathroom stuff obviously. But Bianca wouldn’t just ditch him for an adventure. Right?
His eyebrow slowly raised as he looked curiously at Reyna. “What kind of adventure? Did your sister ditch you too?”
Reyna sucked on her lower lip and nodded. "Hylla went off with Bianca. Big sisters, right? I say we have our own adventure here. You can meet my dogs too."
Reyna whistled and two mechanical dogs seemed to appear out of thin air, one silver and one gold, jumping on the bed and nuzzling at Nico's hand for pets. "The gold one's Aurum and the silver one is Argentum. I think they like you."
The pout stayed strong, his body slouching. Nico still didn’t like the idea of it. Bianca running off with this Hylla girl. Having adventures without him. That wasn’t fair at all. Especially when he was the one always telling her about cool heroes and legends and stuff.
It was hard to keep sulking though when there were two dogs nuzzling him. A wide grin on his face, he uncrossed his arms to pet the dogs, looking them as much over as he could. “How’d you do that? Where’d they come from? Do you have other animals you can just make appear?” He laughed as one nudged its nose against his cheek. “Why’s it so dark here?”
"Nope, these two are the only ones I have. It's just one of the things I do." She ran a hand through her hair, undoing the braid and running her fingers through it. "Because we're underground in a mountain. It's kind of like a secret hideout except there are a whole lot of people here from various places."
“What other things do you do?” Nico asked curiously, throwing his arms over the dog that flopped across his lap. “Which mountain? What are we hiding out from?”
Reyna scratched absently at Aurum's haunches, trying to decide how much to tell Nico about herself. "Weapons proficiency," she said, leaving out the bit about her power boost. "It's because of my mom.."
If Nico asked, she'd answer, but it might be best not to give too much information from the beginning. "Mount Weather. In the mid-Atlantic - it's a converted military base, so we're living underground. It's winter outside, so there's the warmth factor because no one really wants to freeze to death, plus there was a dragon attack a few days ago. Not sure what other threats there might be out there."
Many questions bustled in Nico’s mind. Who was her mom? Mid-Atlantic where? Was this another military school if it was a converted military base? A comment about how duh of course it was winter, Christmas was just around the corner (although if they were mid-Atlantic, freezing to death shouldn’t be so much of an issue, right?).
Everything was pushed out of his head though with one word. “There was a dragon attack?!” His eyes were bright as he shifted under the dog enough to sit up on his knees. “What’d it look like? Is it still around? Is that the adventure we’re going on? Do we get to fight the dragon?”
"I didn't see the dragon, but some of the people here defeated the dragon. Sadly, I don't think there's another one for us to fight. But we could go exploring. You have a sword, right? We could go exploring, see if there are any monsters for us to encounter."
Nico slumped a bit before he perked up, his eyes going wide. “There was a sword by my bed. I think. Is that mine?”
Reyna nodded. "It is. After all, you need a good weapon for an adventure, right?" She pulled her dagger out from under the covers. "I have a dagger and a spear."
She gave him an impish smile. "What do you say we go find some food and then we can hunt some monsters or practice swordfighting?"
His eyes bugged out a moment and Nico made a note to be careful where he climbed on Reyna’s bed. Last thing he wanted was to get stabbed because he crawled over the wrong area. Although it had to have some sort of sheath, right? Otherwise she’d like roll over in the night and hurt herself. Unless the dagger came from the same space the dogs did…
The thoughts flitted quickly through his head as a wide grin spread across his face. “YES,” he said as he half-slid half-fell off the bed and scrambled to the other bed to get the sword he’d knocked over.
