How do you celebrate the new year here? Is there singing? I could go for some singing right now. I always enjoyed the start of a new year at home. There was so much... hope and promise. I mi I think we could use more of that after what we've been through together.

Yes, singing! We have a song for everything. I'll teach you Auld Lang Syne.

Wonderful! I love a good song. We'll make sure everyone can hear us!

Loudly is the best way to sing. Especially for celebrating.

I knew I liked you. Fili and I ought to recreate the song we sung for Bilbo when we first met him!

If you teach me I'll help out. Do you have a lot of songs where you're from?

Are you good at catching things?

We have a lot of songs. It's a popular way to tell a story in our world.

Well that depends. What sort of things? Am I chasing them or are they being thrown at me?

At Hogwarts, the Sorting Hat sang a song about the founders every year. It always had a new one. I suppose it didn't have much to do with its time besides compose ballads, being a hat and all.

Drinking, dancing, fireworks. Music, apparently. And a kiss at midnight for luck.

A kiss for luck?

I have no idea where it came from. Maybe something to do with starting the year with something positive? It can be fun, anyway, whether it's with someone special or just grabbing a stranger.

I see. I believe I will sit that tradition out, but best of luck to everyone else.

You don't have to, but it's a fun tradition.

Parties. Lots and lots of parties and drinking. And if you're lucky enough to live in New York City, you stay away from Times Square and ring in the new year at home with a party. But it's always a good idea to do the Times Square thing, just to have done it. There are a ton of people and it's a big party in the middle of the city, and at midnight a ball drops, and it's pretty awesome.

I'm pretty sure that there's going to be a big party going on here.

A ball dropping is something people wish to see?

I hope there's a big party. I've always loved parties.

We used to have fireworks where I'm from. They'd light up the sky for a few minutes. Sometimes we'd have sparklers to play with.

Fireworks! We don't ever see enough of those. It's a shame Gandalf isn't here. I'll bet he could make the best fireworks anyone has seen.

I have no idea who that is but maybe someone around here can whip up some fireworks. We've got people who know magic so maybe they can do something like them!

Gandalf the Grey? He's a wizard. I hope someone can. That would be very exciting. Festive!

Sorry, not ringing any bells for me. I vaguely know the Harry Potter ones but I didn't really get into their books.

Oh. I thought everyone knew who Gandalf was. I don't really know Harry Potter at all. We didn't have those books.

No, no books about anyone by that name. I never spent much time reading at all, to tell you the truth. I was too busy learning to fight.

A lot of big parties. Normally I add a year to my age too but last new year was only a few weeks ago when I was in Murderworld so I suppose I'll still be 18 for another year.

Or the start. It's easier than remembering a day.

That's true, it would be easier to remember than a random day. I'd pick one, only I'm not sure if it matters much here.

We marked a new year of life with our own celebrations, but for some, I can see how it would be less important. If you've lived for hundreds already... Perhaps it has a different meaning.

It's useful to know your approximate age to keep track of biological changes particularly in the first two decades. I don't need to be specific to the day.
