See, when it comes to vigilante justice, you can only take it so far. And then that's what police and courts are for.
But I can totally understand why people would say screw it, and take it on themselves. Sometimes the police have their hands tied. Or the bad guy covered his tracks too well. I don't really think that was the case here.
