Weddings can be a lot of different things. Where I'm from, it's really all up to the couple. There are many different cultures and religions that have their own traditions and expectations as far as a wedding is concerned. Some people have weddings that last several days. Sometimes there are ten people in the wedding party and 500 guests, and huge cakes and a fancy meal. Sometimes you just go to a judge and sign some paperwork and you're done. In my country, usually the wedding dress was white, and the groom would wear a suit. The bride would have attendants wear dresses of a color of she picked out, and you'd see that color in something like the groom's tie or the flowers, or place settings, stuff like that. But other countries had different traditions.
I read up a lot when I got engaged because I didn't know what I'd want us to do. My husband and I just had a ceremony with our closest friends here, and then we had a party for everyone after. I think we probably would have done something similar at home.
