I've found that knitting is an excellent way to keep one's hand's busy while occupied with thoughts. Captain Jim told me the second time Gil and I had dinner with him at the lighthouse that he learned to knit when he was just starting his life on the sea. It kept his mind off of the initial seasickness and kept his feet warm, eventually.
