Eddie's been diagnosed with an illness. It isn't simply a matter of turning into a monster once a month. He's been nearly killed by a creature that's now cursed him for life. He's looking forward to a lot of pain, a lot of stress on his body, moods and instincts he can't control, and the monthly risk of turning someone else. It's going to affect him every day for the rest of his life, and is likely to drastically cut his life expectancy.
He would rather die than infect another person, the way I did.
We're not in our world, but if we were, it would come with restrictions and laws and crushing social prejudices that would keep him from having a steady job or marrying. His mother was nearly killed by a werewolf. This culturally carries a lot of weight for him, and for people of our world.
It may seem like nothing to other people, but it isn't nothing. Insisting he should be grateful to be alive or insisting it isn't that bad and he's whining is not only insensitive, but it's not seeing the whole picture.
