Sorry wasn't what James wanted to hear. Which wasn't to say he didn't want Peter to be sorry-- he did. He should be sorry. It was just that Peter was right, it didn't fix it. It didn't even come close.
He ignored it, pushing ahead with what he'd come here for. "I just want to know why," he said. "How could you ever want to do that to me? To any of us?" He sounded angry, but there was a rough edge to his voice that made it obvious that his anger was just covering up how upset he really was. "Sirius says you were never our friend, but you made me a promise, Pete. Best friends aren't supposed to do this to each other."
