Some of our allies were already under assault, by Germany. We'd been supporting them, though not officially at war until our own soil was attacked by another country, Japan. We declared war on them, and Germany declared war on us in response. We could have an entire class on why the war began in the first place, but that's how we were officially brought into it. Germany had been invading countries already, trying to unite the entire region under their dictatorship. Their leadership believed they were superior to other groups of people, so they were forcibly removing people from their homes and taking them elsewhere, to put them to work, to kill them. Many of us didn't know the full truth while it was happening. We weren't told, or didn't want to believe it was actually happening. I didn't want to sit at home going to school instead of helping, so I joined the Army.
Do you like it, or is it something you're doing because it's familiar?
