Simon didn't ask how she knew that, whether it was just optimism or if she actually had some kind of knowledge he didn't. Kaylee had come from what was ostensibly the future and insisted that River would be all right, too, but Simon had a rather different opinion of "all right" than other people. He'd known his sister before the Alliance got to her. He'd known the girl she was supposed to be, and every time he saw her now it broke his heart. He knew that things would never, ever go back to normal.
"Because of me?" He chuckled humorlessly, shaking his head. "I'm just trying to stay afloat and keep her safe in a place that doesn't have any ways to make her better. Hawke can't do anything with his magic, but there's a psychic that ... well, he might be able to help, but I don't want anyone rooting around in her head."
