Katniss had a good head for strategy, but not usually in this context, so it was taking her a little while to think it all through. Contemplating her cards also gave her a good excuse not to have to respond to the 'tragedy' it would be for her to be lost. It wouldn't have been tragic, it would have been ridiculous for her to die here, when this world was so much safer in a lot of ways than her own. But she was glad not to be dead, mostly, so that was something.
"I only hunted for food," she said. "It was illegal, but I did it anyway. The Peacekeepers used to buy our game, so they didn't care."
She didn't really like the idea of hunting for sport, even if it was an animal. There was no sport in killing anything. It was always about killing in order to live, whether the victim was prey or another predator.
She took her turn, and then looked up at him. "Yeah. I learned not to go hunting with people that carry guns."
