Katniss did her best to follow along with the rules as he showed them to her. It made sense, but she was still a very new card player, and playing poker had made her feel like a novice. There were a lot of subtleties to that game that she hadn't grasped yet, although she had kind of liked the part about trying to tell when someone else was bluffing.
This game looked much simpler, at least in that regard. She was actually a little disappointed by that, until she realized that it gave her more room to analyze him as he talked about things other than cards. Which, she supposed, was the point.
"My turn?" she asked, just to make sure. She took her turn, picking a card and then, after a few moments of thought, discarding another.
She looked at him, scrutinizing his face for any indicators of judgment in the question. Finding none, she said, "Yeah. I made a stupid mistake and spooked the boar. Someone was shooting at it, and it hit me instead." A little defensively, she added, "I'm not used to hunting with large groups of people."
That wasn't why it had happened. But it also happened to be true, and it made her feel less stupid than being distracted over a boy.
