Adrian looked longingly at the door that led to his and Sydney's bedroom, wanting nothing more than to crawl into bed next to his girlfriend and get some sleep. He loved his job, so much more than he'd ever expected he could, but it was exhausting some days. He couldn't go to sleep yet, though. He had another job to do, one he'd volunteered for. A few people had gone missing and traditional searching had yielded no real answers. If they were anywhere on this planet, though, he was confident in his ability to find them in a dream. Dream walking was easier if you knew the person well, but Adrian was the best Dreamer he knew. Granted, he only knew three others who were capable of it, but that was beside the point. He was confident he could make a connection even with someone he didn't know, from pictures and things they'd said on the Network. He had to try at any rate. Luna Lovegood was the first name on the list and she was also probably the one he was the most familiar with. They hadn't been friends, but he had read the Harry Potter books and seen the movies. That gave him a more intimate knowledge of her than some of the others, so he decided to start with her. Sitting on the couch in the common area of his apartment, which divided the bedrooms, Adrian entered a meditative state and brought up the image of Luna's face. He vividly pictured her, making sure he had the details firm in his mind and then he reached out with Spirit. His magic filled him, as it always did when he did this and he sent it out into the world of dreams, searching for Luna. Nothing. Well, not exactly nothing. It was unlike any sensation he'd experienced in his dream walking before. It wasn't like when he'd desperately tried to connect to Tatiana using spirit after her death, but it didn't feel like the times he'd attempted a connection to someone who wasn't asleep. It wasn't even like those times he'd tried to connect to Sydney while she'd been in reeducation, under the influence of drugs that blocked his power from reaching her. Adrian shrugged off the weirdness of what he was feeling. He knew the radiation here impacted his magic. Healing took a greater toll on him that usual. Maybe it was affecting his dream walking abilities, too. Maybe it was making him feel weird and Luna truly was just awake, wherever he was. Undaunted, Adrian tried again with each of the others on his list. Lavender Brown, Antoine Triplett, Blossom. Each attempt was the same. No connection. It was nighttime for him and the rest of Mount Weather. What were the odds that none of them was asleep wherever they were. Adrian longed for Sonya in that moment and her years of experience with Spirit. He longed to talk to Lissa or even Sydney about what had just happened, but he suspected Lissa was just as asleep as Sydney was and he decided it could wait until morning. True, he could find either of them in their own dreams, but his failed attempts to contact the others had left him even more exhausted and the thought of crawling into his own bed was more than appealing. After the briefest hesitation, his decision was made. He rose from the couch and made his way into the bedroom he shared with Sydney. He couldn't help watching his girlfriend for a moment, so peaceful in sleep. As always, she was the most beautiful creature walking the earth to him. The temptation to wake her was strong, but he resisted it. She needed the sleep as much as he did. Stripping off his shirt and jeans, he slipped into the spot next to her on the bed as silently as he could. Just as quietly and gently, he pulled her into his arms. Just being close to her soothed his dark thoughts about his failure to connect to any of the missing. He'd try again in the morning. It would all be okay. With Sydney at his side, he felt like he could do anything. |
