She'd been trying to find a way to explain this to him, but right in the midst of a whirlwind of emotion wasn't a good time for it, and she was afraid she was going to say something she'd regret.
Telling him to sleep with someone else was probably something she'd regret. But at the same time, being with other people was one of the options for fixing this, and obviously he was thinking about it.
