"I would give you the chance of a head start," Finn answered with a bit of a grin and a wave of his hand out toward the pool. "But I didn't want to insult you that way."
Now that he had calmed down a little, it was easier to talk to her than he would have expected. He was still feeling a little overly self-conscious, worried that something he was going to say was going to come off as particularly stupid. But somehow, in the image that he'd carried around of her throughout high school, he'd forgotten that she could be funny too -- and that was part of what he'd liked about her in the first place.
It made him feel more at ease, because it reminded him of Katrina. They were certainly funny in different ways, but Katrina's nearly acidic wit was what had first drawn him to her.
