He didn't know what to feel, or maybe it was a matter of feeling everything at the same time. Relief to see her. Guilt that she was here. Solace at not being the only one. More guilt that she was here. Guilt was a given, though. Someone sneezed, and Peter Parker could feel a twinge of the stuff. Few people ever made him feel it more than Mary Jane Watson -- that was all. It had been a routine search. They broke apart, and Peter had scoured the area for signs of arrivals or of parts to bring back to base. The pod hadn't been anything new as far as he'd been told. They popped up. Well, they zipped down, he supposed. He had been found inside one, so really they were all pod people. Not that he ever needed to qualify himself as less weird. A spider bite had secured his spot in the annals of history as straight-up freaky, and it wasn't like he'd been a normal kid before that. Tangent. Anyway. Routine search, get over to the pod, open it up, and hope for the best. He'd been doing good up until the door was pried away. It was impossible to not grin at the sight of one of his oldest friends, but that split second came and went -- just about tearing that grin clear off. She shouldn't be here. How was she here? It was her, right? Of course it was. No one else could snore like that. She shouldn't be here. He ran a hand back through his hair, momentarily too lost in his thoughts about how and why this was happening. But, as always, his instincts kicked into gear. It wasn't safe out here, even if he could fend off just about anyone or anything if he needed to. He pulled the crude walkie-talkie out of his backpack, opening up the channel to reach base. The static churned in the background for a few seconds before a voice came through. "Hello?" Peter shook himself alert again. "Hey -- yeah. Sorry, was just thinking about... about stuff. And things. I-- listen, I'm bringin' someone back. Might need to get a team out here to pick apart the pod, but I'll take back what I can." The voice on the other end crackled through. "Got it. Parker?" Peter nodded, despite that no one could see it. "Yeah. Yeah, Parker." He switched the channel off, then turned back to the redhead sleeping within the small capsule. There was a short sigh as he leaned in to start loosening her restraints. "Y'know, you didn't have to hold onto my bad luck after the split, MJ." A snort of a snore was given in response. "Yeah, I know," he answered, hoisting her up and into his arms. "That's not half as funny as my usual jokes. Let's chalk it up to coffee withdrawal. How about I try out some other material? Didja hear the one about the gorilla in the freight elevator?" |
