Log: Another Guthrie
Who: Lorna Dane and Sam Guthrie What: Sam's just coming back When: Midday, before the Guthrie meeting (Back dated to Thursday January 10th) Where:The mansion grounds
From the ground Sam simply looked like a far off jet. In the sky he had his arms wrapped around his duffel bag as he neared the mansion, slowing a bit in an attempt to make the graceful landing the gliders did. However, slow from his was still several hundred miles an hour and his attempt to be graceful was surely doomed from the start. The look of a jet shortly turned into the look of a meteor as he came down in the yard. Legs extended he ended up slamming into the grass, skidding for quite a distance, and slamming into a tree hard enough to cause some of the trunk to splinter when he finally stopped. He looked around (pushing his goggles up from over his eyes), praying he hadn't been seen, then he slowly stood up. Despite the crash landing he was still perfectly clean and uninjured, though he had worn his 'suit' for comfort and just in case he had a worse landing then usual.
Lorna was sitting in the bay window in one of the downstairs rooms when she saw a flash of light go zooming across the sky. She barely noticed it, since her headphones were in and she was trying to concentrate on her math homework. No matter, though, math could wait. She had investigating to do. She got up from her chair and headed outside quickly to see what the heck was going on. (Rob Thomas was still blasting in her ears as she reached the new arrival.)
Sam put on a smile as he saw someone running out, which instantly turned more shy when he saw the green haired woman. "Afternoon." He couldn't really muster up more at the moment, shifting the duffel bag to his left hand, the handle barely able to support the weight. The long streak across the grass behind him left a clear picture of what happened, as did the splintered wood. Though his still being perfectly clean suggested something kept him safe with all that crashing going on.
Lorna caught up to him, at first worried. But her frown faded a little when she caught sight of the guy surrounded by the splintered wood. She gave a gentle (but confused) "Hi, there." Then took a cautious step forward. "Are you all right?"
He nodded "I'm fine. This kinda thing happens all the time... Thank ya for yer concern though, mah name's Sam." He said it all pretty quick, actually, his nerves on him a bit since this was his return and already he was looking somewhat inept. He offered his right hand to her and kept that somewhat shy smile. In fact, his southern boy style didn't really mesh well with the suit and situation at the moment and he knew it. Usually he was much more confident and prepared but he was unfortunately distracted.
Lorna stepped forward. Something about the boy looked familiar, but she wasn't sure what it was. She probably should have recognized him straight away as Paige's brother, but her head wasn't in the game. "Lorna Dane." Lorna responded, reaching forward to shake his hand. It was warm.
"Miss Dane, it's mah pleasure." He smiled more genuinely, feeling a bit better now, since he was back at the institute, his second home. He was also about to see his family and that always got a smile from him. He released her hand and looked to the door she came out of "Are ya headin' back in? Ah wouldn't mind if someone could help me find mah family. I haven' been 'ere since they came and I'm figurin' I'd actually need a lady ta get Paige fer me." With the weight of the bag he actually leaned back a bit more then usual, a very relaxed and open (if occasionally awkward) stance.
"Paige!" Lorna said, putting two and two together and getting four. "Oh, you're Sam." She gave a bright smile and shook her head a little. "I shoulda known. Come on, I'll walk you back in. Do you need help with that bag?" She asked, turning to him curiously.
He laughed a bit at her offer, though not mean spiritedly. "What kinda gentleman would Ah be if'n I had ya carryin' mah bag fer me?" He smiled down to her, moving to her left side so he didn't hit her with the bag as they walked. "I 'preciate ya offer, though..." He paused for a moment "And I didn't know I was still known 'ere after I left fer so long. It's good ta know."
"Well, I know Paige." Lorna said, giving him a nod as they walked together. "And she talks about her family a lot. I mean, I'm surprised I haven't met you already, in all honesty." She gave him a very flirtatious smile. "How long have you been gone?"
The flirtatious smile got a slight blush and a bit of a look down from Sam for a moment. "I've been in Kentucky for a year 'bouts. I was 'ere fer 'bout five years 'fore that. What 'bout you Miss Dane?" He looked to her as they got to the door, pulling it open for her and following her in.
"Oh, I've been here for a year and something." Lorna said, stepping into the mansion. She looked at him over her shoulder, wondering how old he really is. She'd have to do some research and figure it all out. "What'd you do over the last year, while you were in Kentucky? Five years is a long time to be away."
"I jus' helped bring in money and keep everythin' straight for the family. Ma has a lot ta do. Now I can fly back whenever I needs ta though so we decided I oughta come watch the others and help out with powers and such." As they stepped inside her looked around a bit, reorienting himself to the mansion and trying to distract himself from Lorna who was clearly sizing him up.
Lorna turned around once they were inside, getting a better look up and at him. She walked backward through the hall as they talked, not really paying all that much attention to where she was going. "Well, aren't you just the Mama's Boy." She said, playfully, giving him a grin. "It's nice to know there's a family man left among us."
He laughed a bit "Suppose I am. All the Guthries'r family people." He noticed her walking backward and became a bit nervous again with that. He looked down the halls and then back to Lorna. "What 'bout yerself? Are ya a family lady?" She smiled to her, trying to make conversation.
"Oh yeah." Lorna said, grinning softly. "Well, I was adopted when I was very little... but I'm really close with my parents. They're really understanding. At least, they try to be. It was hard when I'd throw a fit at the dinner table, and forks would go flying across the room." Lorna blushed a little. "But I can't wait to have a real family of my own, you know? And in the mean time, the school is my family." She gave him a bright smile.
He nodded "The school is like a family ta us Guthries too... so, are ya a Daddy's girl like I'm a Momma's boy?" He said almost playfully, having to turn it back around on her. He returned her smile of course, feeling just a bit more relaxed despite not being really good with women.
Lorna gave a little nod. "A bit, I'd say." Lorna admitted, giving another gentle shrug. She bumped into a table and moved a bit, then continued walking backward toward... wherever it was they were going. "I'm not sure. So, what did you say you were doing back here?" She asked, wanting the focus to be on him and not on herself.
Sam stopped at the end of the girl's hallway. "I'm moving back in. The Professor said I could and Ma said I oughta. Now I jus' need to let Paige and Jay know. Would you be able ta get her fer me and tell her ta get Jay and meet me in the common room? I'd 'preciate it." With her keeping the conversation on him so strictly his nervousness returned. He had to save himself, at least for a moment.
Lorna nodded. "Sure. I'll be right back." She darted down the hallway, looking in the different rooms for either of the Guthrie siblings. She came back a few moments later, a sad pout on her face. "I tried to pass along the message. I bet she'll get it. I told everyone." She gave a little shrug.
Same nodded and smiled to her "Thank ya. I 'preciate it." He glanced around for a moment, then saw the common room. "Sounds like I'll be settlin' in fer a bit if you don't mind me joining ya." He assumed that she had been there when she saw him come down in the yard.
"I don't mind at all." Lorna said, giving him a bright smile. She turned to lead the way into the Common Room. Her math book was still there, glaring daggers at her for casting it aside so carelessly when something more interesting came around. "...I'll try to be entertaining." She added after a moment. Now she was very glad there was something to distract her from her homework.
He laughed a bit and smiled at that "Oh, you don't have ta entertain me Miss Dane. I dun mind jus' lookin' out the window or sittin' fer a bit after mah flight. I 'preciate yer offer though. It's quite sweet of ya." He made sure to give one more bright smile in return to hers. He'd hate to be rude, especially having just came back.
Lorna gave a little shrug. "Suit yourself." She said, almost teasingly. "But a true gentleman would save a lady from such terrible things as math textbooks and boring homework assignments." She added. Yeah, that was a flirtatious tone in her voice. But that was just Lorna. She couldn't help it.
"Then I 'spose you'd have me entertain you." He said back somewhat teasingly, though more friendly then flirting. "I don't see why I couldn't. You'd just have ta tell me if'n ya had anythin' in mind." He wasn't good with entertaining others, really. Most of the things he did was by himself.
"Well, there's a fooz ball table." Lorna said, shrugging again. "Or we could have a game of chess, or checkers... heck, there's even a Monopoly set in there if we get bored enough." Lorna offered, enjoying his smile. Yeah, she might have been a little boy crazy.
He nodded as she listed things "I can try whatever ya'd like ta do. I'm not picky." He watched her as he put it to her to choose. He was still a bit nervous off and on, he hoped the games might distract from the flirting.
"Okay." Lorna glanced around the room, then picked out the foozball table. She'd do her best not to let her powers get in the way of wanting to win. "Fooz? Fooz is good."
He nodded and moved to go to the table, stopping behind her first and motioning with his arm. "After you, Miss Dane." He smiled and followed her to the table, moving to the opposite side and teasing the handles before preparing to play against her. Sam was a gentleman, he felt, but he wasn't in the habit of letting anyone just beat him, even if it was a cute, flirty woman.
Lorna gave him a smirk as she moved to the table. She was pretty good at Fooz Ball, she thought. "You can start." She said, letting her hands rest delicately on the handles.
Sam nodded and dropped the ball down into the middle of the table. It was pretty apparent but how hard her spun the handles and tried that he wasn't just going to let her win. Even though he did occasionally grab the end of the poles her player were on it wasn't to cheat, he looked up at her and smiled when he did, teasing her playfully.
"Hey!" Lorna said, then gave a laugh when he stopped her from being able to get the ball. Two could play at that game. The poles were made of metal, right? She aimed and took a shot at her goal, using her powers to move the pole and make sure his goalie was out of the way.
He laughed and leaned up, seeing her hand wasn't even on the pole. He kind of put two and two together when he couldn't move it. "Now that, Miss Dane, is most 'suredly cheating." He said with a friendly smile. "I figured you fer an honest lady." He was definitely being playful despite his drive to win.
"What? I would never." Lorna said, playfully, though she was grinning all the same. She reached for the ball to hand it to him. "Here you go."
He dropped it back into the middle and tried again to get the points to win. He made faces at her occasionally to distract her when it looked like she might make a good shot or when he could. He laughed and generally enjoyed himself as they played.
After a while they each had a couple of goals. Lorna wasn't all that competitive, really, and she was willing to let someone else win. Especially if that someone had a very cute southern accent.
Oh if he knew she was letting him win he'd be quite unhappy. He didn't know that, however, and was eventually victorious. There was no bragging from Sam, only a smile and a handshake. "Quite the game Miss Dane. It was mah pleasure."
Lorna nodded and smiled. "The pleasure's all mine." She said, giving him one of her award-winning smiles. After a moment she glanced at the clock. "Oh, it's almost lunch time."
He nodded "Well then, it was mah pleasure ta meet ya." He gave her one last polite smile, assuming she was going to lunch and likely having to go himself. He also needed to check around for the other Guthries and if nothing else they'd likely get the message after they came back after lunch themselves.
Lorna returned his smile, then moved to pick up her things and head up to her room. She had a bit of a bounce in her step and was rather pleased with herself.
