25 Years Later...
“What are you doing, Harry?” Severus murmured and rubbed his eyes sleepily.
“Watching,” Harry replied distractedly.
“I can see that, but why? It’s in the middle of night Harry and you’ve seen the view a million times before. Come back to bed.”
“Not yet.”
Severus grumbled and heaved himself upright, grabbing the green comforter off the bed. He walked the short distance that had separated him from his husband. Wordlessly he draped the comforter around their shoulders.
“So what are you watching?” he murmured into Harry’s ear. There was no longer any sign of sleepiness in his voice, but rather a hint of teasing and seduction, something which was further accented by his hand slipping inside Harry’s boxers.
“For a white phoenix.” Harry calmly moved Severus’ hand away from inside his boxers, letting it rest instead on his thigh.
“A white phoenix?” Severus murmured incredulously. “Nonsense, there’s no such thing as white phoenixes.”
“Believe what you want, but he will be here tonight.”
“How do you know it is a He? Wait a minute; you said he will be here tonight. How do you know that? Don’t tell me you’ve been listening to Luna again. I swear as each year goes by she’s turns more eccentric. Don’t know how Neville puts up with her.”
“He loves her and that’s beside the point. The phoenix will be here tonight. Singing a song in memory of those he loved.”
“Why are you speaking in past tense? Do you mean Fawkes is back?” Severus voice trembled slightly over the name; he had not spoken it for many years.
“Clever as ever, my Severus. Yes, it’s Fawkes, but he’s moved on – to another body and another life. Yet, each year he returns and sings for us.”
“Why didn’t you tell me before?”
“I don’t know. It didn’t feel right. I think he must have something to do with it. But tonight we’ll share it,” Harry closed his eyes for a moment, when he opened them he was smiling. “He’s here. I can feel it.”
“But how?” Severus whispered, confusion showing in his dark eyes as he too became aware of the phoenix presence, as the night air suddenly came alive with song.
“Because we share something,” Harry murmured in reply, his left hand absently reaching out for the wand lying on the window sill. Then he moved closer to Severus, his lips brushing with Severus’ lips as he murmured: “Listen, just listen.”
So Severus did just that, letting the phoenix song surround him, filter through all his senses and tell him the story of his past. He closed his eyes as the memories became alive again, flashes of his past life randomly passing through his mind as he listened to the song. First he saw all that had made him the man he had been before he was brought back by Fawkes and then he saw all the happiness he found in his new life. Silently he thanked Fawkes for the gift he had been given all those years ago, and he felt Fawkes reply in his mind, “You are welcome, old friend.”
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Harry spoke softly as the song had ended.
“Yes it is – it always was. I’m so glad he decided to let me in on your secret,” Severus replied.
“You’re not mad at me for not telling you before? Though he does not visit me every year,” Harry asked.
“No, I can understand why you waited. So, it’s not Hogwarts he returns to but you?”
“He returns for us,” Harry replied with a smile. “Happy Anniversary Severus.”
“Happy Anniversary,” Severus replied, kissing Harry on the lips. “I can’t believe it’s been twenty years since we got married.”
“It was fantastic, wasn’t it? Adelaide and Abe both crying and then in the middle of the ceremony a goat ran in out of nowhere...”
They both chuckled at the memory.
“I can feel that, Professor Prince, unless it’s a wand you’re poking me with,” Severus murmured in reply.
“No need to get cheeky, Professor Prince,” Harry replied in turn. “Now come.”
“Oh I intend to, I intend to.”
