Josh, Jay, 'Berto, and Lizzie (Tuesday afternoon)
Fortunately Josh had been in his room and hadn't been hard to talk into heading over to have a look at Jay. Sam felt a little bit guilty, like he was taking advantage, but he wasn't about to let that stop him. Not when it came to family. Jay'd been suffering too much for too long and Josh was the most powerful healer in the place.

"Here it is." He stopped outside Jay and 'Berto's door and made himself do them and their room-mates the courtesy of knocking, even though he wanted to just barge right in. "Thanks again for comin', Josh. I really appreciate it."

When one was a healer, one grew accustomed to frequent interruptions and requests. He'd warned Mark about the potential inconveniences in his immediate future and had apologized in advance. So far, the warning had yet to dissapoint.

Sam was a friend though, and someone who cared for his family with all the steadfast passion he very rarely showed anyone else. When one of Sam's siblings was hurting Josh was more than happy to play rescue. And Jay was a good kid who was hitting manifestation hard and running headlong into every obstacle in the way.

"Sure, Sam. Any time."

"Finally!" Roberto had been waiting impatiently for Josh and Sam to arrive, and at the knock on the door he jumped up off the foot of Jay's bed to answer it. Someone could do something to minimize his room-mate's (and best friend's) misery any time they wanted, thank you very much.

He managed to shove down most of his impatience by the time he had the door open, though, and smiled at the two older boys in the hall. "Come in." He turned immediately and went back to his spot at the foot of Jay's bed, where he leaned against the bedpost and tried not to look as anxious as he felt.

Lizzie and 'Berto had been of the opinion that Jay be thoroughly prepared to have hands lain upon him. So he was dressed simply in a pair of jeans and nothing else but socks. Between the high setting on the thermostat, 'Berto's powers and Lizzie's body heat, Jay wasn't much lacking for warmth. Or mood either. His spirits having been lifted by all the support he'd received.

"Hi, Josh," he greeted with a nod, fingers flexing about his twin's where their hands were clasped between their thighs. "Thanks for comin'. Sammy."

Lizzie couldn't agree more with 'Berto's 'finally' when the knock came at the door. She didn't want to get her hopes up or nothing, but at least having Josh come over and look at Jay was doing something about it instead of sitting around waiting for things to happen.

She squeezed Jay's hand back, smiling hopefully at Sam and Josh as they came in. "Hi Sammy, Josh." She paused, then added her own, "Yes, thank you," because even though Jay'd already said it, it felt wrong not to.

Sam didn't hold the incredibly terse greeting against Roberto, he realized the boy was stressed out and worried and he couldn't blame him at all. "Thanks 'Berto," he answered his already retreating back, stepping in and then to the side to let Josh through.

"Hey Jaybird. Lizzie." He ruffled her hair slightly as he stopped near the head of the bed all three of the kids were occupying. "How you holdin' up, other'n frustrated all to hell?" he asked Jay.

Josh closed the door as Jay snorted. "Frustrated all t' hell ain't enough?" the younger teen replied.

"And hurting almost all the time. Don't forget that part," 'Berto supplied. Because frustrated didn't even start to cover Jay's problems. Not when he'd had to carry him back in just the other day because he coudln't even stand up straight or walk on his own.

She smiled at Sammy as he ruffled her hair, though she used her free hand to comb her fingers through it when he was done, mostly on instinct.

"Yeah, that's pretty essential, too," she agreed with 'Berto. And there was the whole things moving on their own that was slightly freaky, but frustrated to all hell and hurting a hell of a lot covered the general bit.

"But least it feels like we're doin' something 'bout it now."

Sam bit back a sigh and leaned against the bedpost, out of Josh's way. Damn but there were times he almost wished Jay and Lizzie were still little enough that all it took to make just about anything all better was a tickle fight or cuddling up to read them a story or sing them a lullaby. Which was probably a sad indication of just what his relationship was to most of his siblings, but it was so ingrained that it didn't even occur to him.

"Yeah, well. Josh was good enough to agree to have a look, but remember, manifestin' ain't exactly somethin' that can be fixed or cured," he pointed out quietly, fingers straying to ruffle Josh's hair in mirror of what he'd done to Lizzie's as he spoke. He sort of hated that he might have gotten their hopes up for nothing, because there really might not be much Josh could do. But at least they'd know.

"And unfortunately, I can't interfere very much," Josh replied with a sigh. "It's a rule," he added, before anyone could protest. "But, I can take a look for you."

"It's a stupid rule!" 'Berto announced emphatically as soon as Josh had finished speaking, face screwing up in obvious aggravation. "I know it is not your fault," he added a bit less vehemently by way of rather oblique apology. "But it is still a stupid rule."

"It's okay, 'Berto," Jay sighed. Looking to Josh, he nodded. "Figured as much. Or you'd probably have no life an' stuff jus' helpin' folks go about it right."

She couldn't help but silently agree a bit with 'Berto. But she'd already had her temper tantrum about rules that she could understand but still thought were stupid, having another one wouldn't help much.

"And people constantly buggin' you to fix it for them," she agreed with Jay. "But still, you takin' a look will be a heck of a lot better than doin' nothing."

"Exactly," Sam agreed with Lizzie's assessment. "'Least we'll have a better idea of what's goin' on." He looked questioningly to Josh. "An' maybe how much longer it's gonna take?" He wasn't actually sure how much Josh would be able to tell, but he was hoping he'd at least be able to ballpark it for Jay.

"That's up to Jay," he replied, with a shrug. "Manifestations are the culmination of the body's preparation versus the individual's ability to cope. Some people go too soon, some people manifest in the blink of an eye, and others suffer through pains and aches, and a list of other really unfair things." Josh himself had had no warning. He supposed his body had been changing slowly, but one day he could suddenly just heal people - and thank God for that or his mother could have lost her hand. "It's different for everyone."

'Berto grimaced, but didn't actually say anything. He'd had strange aches and nightsweats for weeks before he'd manifested, but he hadn't realized it was incipient manifestation at the time. He'd been busy with futebol and school and had written it off as caused by the conditioning and maybe growing pains. It definitely hadn't been as bad as whatever was happening to Jay, though.

She smiled at Sammy when he agreed with her comment, because having her big brother approve of her assessment would likely never not make her feel a little bit pleased.

Her hand tightened a bit on Jay's as she listened to Josh explain bout what people had to go through. Really, she should've expected it'd be bad for Jay with the way it'd been for Sammy and her, but this was bad.

"Didn't we already talk 'bout how not good explodin' jokes were and how much that better not be happenin'?" she asked Jay, mostly teasing.

"You're not gonna explode, Jaybird, so quit stressin' you're sister out 'bout it." Sam thwacked Jay lightly on the back of the head as he spoke, though he was grinning at him as he did it to take any sting out. Of course, now he had to hope he was right. He seemed to be making all sorts of promises and pronouncements he didn't have any way of making good on, lately.

"Well, if you were going to explode, at least Lizzie'd be safe." Josh replied. "Probably Sam too. Roberto and I'd be toast." He gestured with his hands. "Let's take a look and check the timer."

Jay laughed, but got up and stretched slightly. He gave Lizzie's hand a squeeze before quirking an eyebrow at Josh who gestured he sit. Pulling out a desk chair, he turned it around, draped both arms over the back and plopped down.

Josh's hands were warm as they settled against his back. He closed his eyes and dropped his brow to his forearm while the older boy got to work.

She managed to resist sticking her tongue out at Jay when Sam backed her up on the exploding bit, but she couldn't resist a grin at Josh saying she and Sammy'd be safe. Course, that wouldn't be much consolation if Jay did explode, 'less he could put himself back together again. Which, actually, would be kind of awesome.

"I'd miss you," she told Berto solemnly. "Does that help?"

Lizzie squeezed Jay's hand back, then a bit reluctantly let go, watching him go and sit down while Josh started looking at him. She bit her lip as she waited, eyes darting briefly over to Sammy (definitely not for reassurrance. Nope.)

Sam laughed at 'Berto's reaction, and ruffled his hair too for good measure. Kid might as well be another Guthrie, even if he didn't fit the mold, for as much time as he spent with Lizzie and Jay.

"You can hide behind me if you want," he teased. "But he ain't gonna explode, so it don't much matter one way or the other."

He watched as Jay took his position and shoved his hands into his pockets to keep from settling one atop Jay's head as he closed his eyes and bowed his head. Jay wouldn't appreciate feeling like he was being babied in front of folks, and Josh probably wouldn't appreciate the distraction while he was working.

Josh did his best to read Jay's body without touching too deeply on anything that felt too energized. The thirteen year old's body was definitely ready to go any day, and Josh didn't want to probe too far and accidentally trigger something. However, on his second sweep, his brow furrowed.

Lizzie flashed Berto a grin at his response, amused for at least a few seconds before concern took back over.

"Good," she said to Jay, nodding. "You got a whole lotta people who're very insistent on you not exploding. 'Course, all you need is me insistin', but every little bit helps."

It was possible she was just talking because it was either that or fidget in impatient worry for Josh to be done. She shut up when she realized it, and focused on doing her best not to fidget.

Sam watched Josh intently once things got under way, and he had to bite his tongue - almost literally - to keep from asking what was wrong when Josh's brow furrowed. Josh would tell them what he could when he was done, there was no point bothering him with questions - or worrying the littles with them. And if there was anything too worrying he'd hopefully hold off on sharing for now.

Josh leaned back with a sigh. Eyes opening, he wound his hands together before setting them on his hips. "Well, I have good news, and I have bad news. And the better news is that neither has anything to do with exploding."
