Marie-Ange, backdated to Feb 12, evening
Post Party Festivities.

Except for ducking in and out to go to class, where he tried to be as unnoticeable as possible, Jono had stayed in his room. For once his homework was immaculate (if not completely correct) and on time... since he had more time than anyone else to do it. The homeland was also sending him a small stipend for pocket money, another thing he'd never expected. Fifteen dollars a week, a mind blowing seven hundred and eighty dollars a year. Or... around six pounds. Still, it was amazing. Jono had turned one of his notebooks (history, he did it all on the computer) into an accounting book and automatically saved half of it, writing in red pen the money he had to spend. It came in on a plastic card.

He should've become Powered a long time ago.

He had considered it a spin of karma to get to America just in time for them to (over)celebrate Valentine's day, a day he couldn't stand when it was done up in the reserved British style. The abundance of pink and red and hearts and glitter and floofy things had been horrifying. Of all the colors, Jono really hated pink. It reminded him of girls giggling.

So he'd totally skipped the 'dance'. Which probably had very few actual dancers dancing. He'd stayed in his room, read ahead in his English text, and tried to wash the glitter out of his hair. It was heart shaped. The glitter. Americans.

The next day came and hopefully all the pink decorations with it, and Jono felt it was finally safe to venture out. There were people around the halls, but the loud laughing and shouting that accompanied breaks in routine had died down to tolerable levels. He had no reason to go out except for curiosity, to see who was about. That, and he could only spend so much time with his texts before he went mad.

As he poked himself out into the hallway, a cautious turtle out of his dorm room shell, someone promptly flew by him and shoved a horrid orange flower in his hands. It was... it was a rose, he thought, but... a sort of... calico kitten orange. What was it with Americans and their need to genetically engineer everything into odd colors? A flash of red caught his eye and before he could think he held out the rose and mindvoiced, *'Ere. 'Ave this.*

Marie-Ange had stayed outside taking pictures of her projections longer than she had planned. Once she had gotten engrossed in taking pictures, the time had simply flown, and it was not until she had gone through the last roll of film that she had surfaced. Three rolls shot in what had felt like no time at all. Yet three rolls was all she had bothered to bring, thinking that she would not need more than that. She had never anticipated that she would sink so completely into the motion.

Stashing the camera back into the bag slung on her shoulder, Marie-Ange headed back inside. Developing this quantity of film was going to take quite some time.

It was on her way back to her room that there was a voice in her head and a rose in front of her face. Blinking, Marie-Ange looked from the rose up to the face of the person offering it to her and found herself looking at someone she did not immediately recognize.

Gingerly, she accepted the flower with her free hand. "Merci. I do not believe I have made your acquaintance before." She shifted her bags and the rose around so that she could offer her hand. "I am Marie-Ange Colbert."

Luckily he'd gotten a girl. Jono would not have been upset if he'd gotten a guy, but it would've made things a little awkward if he'd stopped to thank him like now. Gently but firmly he shook the proffered hand. Yanks and their handshakes. But... the voice was distinctly not American.

*Yer welcome. I'm Jono. Jono Starsmore. I'm new.* He paused for a moment and then asked, *France?*

Marie-Ange had picked up the shaking hands custom when shortly after arriving at the same. Since it was sometimes difficult to gauge another person's powers or comfort level with touch, she found it better than the normal kiss on the cheek she used to greet people at home.

"Oui," she said, smiling. It was not abnormal to have someone talking in her head. "I was not sure. I sometimes miss meeting new people. I always seem to be off somewhere taking pictures"

Jono did not have much cheek left, so it might've been difficult to find a place, and it probably would've felt like those overzealous foster moms who thought he 'needed some love', aka, needed a lot of hugs and kisses in very public places. So he was good with the handshake then.

*Yeh went ter photograph? Yeh on th' school paper?* 'Cause if she just went to photograph people that would be a little weird.

"Non," she said with a shake of her head. "Not officially. I provide pictures for them on occasion, mais I am not with with yearbook or the paper. I enjoy taking photographs. My maman would call it," she paused and waved a hand in the air, "voyeuristic?"

Perhaps that was not the right word, but it was close.

Well, okay, having photography as a hobby made it alright. *Why en't? yeh on th' yearbook or paper then?*

It was charming to see the European manners and for a moment Jono felt at home. His eyes crinkled in a smile and he absently brushed some hair out of his face. *When did yer get 'ere? 'Ow long yer been 'ere?*

And suddenly he blinked, feeling stupid. *'Ere, let's sit.*

He led them across the hall to the small lounge area and pulled out a chair for her.

"Offering them what I have and shooting what they want are two different things. I prefer to not be limited." Then she laughed at herself and waved a hand in the air. "Listen to me. I am being silly and sounding privileged. In truth I have no idea what I am doing. It is a hobby nothing more."

Following him over, she sat down. "Merci. This is my second year. Are you liking it here so far? You are from England, oui? It is harder to tell with telepathy, but you sound British."

Jono understood that. It was like playing guitar pieces in his instruction book or playing ones he really liked. *Hobbies're good,* he ventured, not currently having any of his own. He had to find out where the instruments were kept.

*I just got 'ere a couple days ago. 'N aye, London. Near Whitechapel.* A lot of foreigners recognized that area because of the Ripper murders, but it was a much better place now. Still had a lot of very old buildings, but getting more built up.

Feeling a little foolish but wanting to talk about it with someone who might understand, he felt more open about talking and confided, *It's a little... odd, here. Th' 'mericans are so loud but... the ones 'ere are so nice, too.*

Dr. Reyes and Josh certainly had been, and his teachers were all quite nice too. It was so different from back home. Jono didn't like to slight his old teachers and carers, but they'd been so harried and overworked.

*I'm in... ninth grade. Yeh?*

"My parents have been there on business. London, I mean, not Whitechapel. I am meant to accompany them the next time they go, though they are currently stationed here in America and there has been no traveling."

Marie-Ange slipped the camera bag off her shoulder and placed it on the floor near her feet. "Oh, oui, je sais. It should get better. You will acclimate to it. If you ever need a bit of Europe, then you can always find me."

"I am in tenth. Everyone here is nice. Do not worry. I was concerned when I first came. When we moved here, I threw such fits my maman kept me home to school. Then there were the powers, and I came here."

Jono just nodded. He didn't have any parents but he didn't feel like saying so. He felt encouraged by what she said. If a French girl could get used to a place, it had to be okay.

*Wot's yer power? I'm... I talk like this. And I 'ave... er. It's 'ard t' explain.*

Marie-Ange had noticed what looked to be bandages, but she was used to seeing the other children in interesting outfits. For a moment she considered asking for more details on his powers and why he spoke telepathically and what might be behind the bandages, but she did not wish to be rude so she decided to answer his question.

"Mine is also difficult to explain. At least for me. I am sure there are lots of fancy terms for it, mais I find that a demonstration is better. One moment please."

Digging through the camera bag, she felt around, pushing past batteries and film canisters until she found the silk bag and pulled it out. Undoing the string, she opened it and removed the top card from the deck. Then she showed it to Jono. It was the Hermit card.

It was like a small push in her mind and then the image of the Hermit was standing beside the table. "I bring them to life, and they listen to only me. I like to photograph them."

Jono had seen a tarot deck before, some kids had them, all girls. They were a cheap thing that could be passed around and didn't have to be complete to do. It had been the 'in' thing to have for awhile for them, while for the boys it had been those yellow LiveStrong bracelets. Jono had not had one because one, they were jewelry, and two, he thought Lance Armstrong was kind of douchy.

His eyes widened as Marie-Ange animated the Hermit and he jumped a little at the unexpected figure.

*That's wicked,* he said approvingly, *I like it. Can yeh read 'em too?*

The figure of the Hermit vanished as quickly as he had arrived as Marie-Ange pulled the rest of the deck out of its bag and returned the card to its place. "It perhaps not a useful power, but it can be entertaining. Oui, I can read them. I do an awful lot of readings. Some things they tell me even come true."

She smiled at the cards and traced the back of the top one with her fingertips. "Would you like a reading?"

Then she passed the deck over to him. "You shall have to shuffle so they can get a feel for you."

Jono nodded, and then took the deck in his long fingers. The cards were worn but kept neatly and were clearly well-loved, so he was careful. Gently he box-shuffled them and then laid the deck face down beside Marie-Ange, gesturing for her to go ahead.

*'Ow often they come true?*

Marie-Ange considered the question as she laid the cards out in front of them. She decided to do the simple Past, Present, Future reading for the moment. Once she had the cards laid out, she placed the deck back into its silk bag.

"Perhaps thirty percent of the time, mais you must remember that it is usually slight things. Sometimes I do not even notice them until I read over my journal later and see a reading I did that correlates."

Then she folded her hands and looked at the cards that were spread between them for a few moments just considering them.

Jono knew there were different ways of reading cards and laying them out but didn't know the card names or what they meant. Marie-Ange skillfully shuffled and dealt, and Jono knew at once she really did do this a lot. It was fun to see someone do something skillfully; at the home there was a lack of finesse that was sadly never missed.

*Slight is okay,* he said. *Don't wan' yeh seein'... death 'r somethin'.*

Though by all accounts he was already sort of... dead.

Glancing up from the cards, Marie-Ange frowned and her brows pulled together. "That does not always mean that. It means a change, the end of something, which typically is the beginning of something else. People who do not know what they are doing misread the card, they cannot understand it, and it frightens them so that they do not look beyond the word."

Then she shook herself slightly and looked down at the cards again. "This one," she tapped the Emperor, "represents the past in this reading." The card showed a man in standard royal dress seated on an elaborate throne holding a scepter and a globe. "It is important to remember that the cards do not necessarily represent you. This could be a figure in your past or it could be the representation of a situation."

"The Emperor card represents the structure of law, social order in a society. He can be seen as a force of law within a world, bringing order to chaos. Of course he can seem oppressive and stifling. Sometimes his rules are too strict or perhaps he does not see individual circumstances. In some readings, he can be viewed as a father figure."

Jono had never seen that that way, and thought it interesting. *Those li'le girls always said i' meant real death, but 'at's more excitin',* he said. *I like your way be'er.*

He knew what the Emperor meant, the children's home. It even looked like a king Britain might have, with the same outdated clothes. Jono personally thought Wills and Harry to be snappier dressers but wouldn't put it past Chuckles if the Royal Mum said so.

But all he said was, *Oh.*

It was wrong to pass judgment on people, but Marie-Ange thought it was terrible that people could qualify themselves as being expert enough to read tarot cards when they were not even bothered to do the smallest amount of research. She had been studying her cards for years, and they were still able to surprise her quite often.

"Some people play at things they know nothing about," she said simply and then focused her attention on the reading.

His reaction to the card was neither telling nor unsettling. Marie-Ange had read cards for a great number of people, and she had stopped trying to determine what their reactions meant a long time ago. They would tell you and ask you questions if they wanted. There was never a need to press.

She tapped the next card, the one in the middle, which was the fool. The boy careful and light about to walk off the edge of the precipice but with no hint of fear or worry in his face. He was ready to take on the world and was trusting that anything to come was positive.

"This card is the present. It is the Fool who is often viewed as a symbol of wildness and freedom. He is walking his own road, going beyond the constrictions of the society that had been holding him in. It is not even that he knows where is going. The risk of falling is part of the experience of his journey, though it is not yet known whether it will be for the better or the worse. The number of his card is 0. He has no set place in things. He is outside the deck but still of the deck."

Jono shrugged. *It was jus' li'le girls playin'.*

He listened to her explanation of the next card. The Fool? Well, becoming a sort of new form of life probably qualified as 'going beyond the constrictions of society'. In fact, the whole thing fit him so well it was a little creepy.

*Why's 'e called th' Fool then? For walkin' off th' cliff?*

"The cliff is symbolic of the risks he is taking. He is walking away from everything and everyone he has known. The path that he takes is not set. It is foolish yet he goes into the unknown without fear and carrying only joy."

*So 'e's foolish for bein' optimistic,* Jono said thoughtfully. *'N not bein' cautious.*

He could see that. Being without fear was a great thing, if one could carry it off, but it got you run over by cars and knifed by gang members and all. Still, being happy about the future was a good thing, since it didn't pay to worry too much about it.

Nodding, Marie-Ange turned to the next card. "This card represents the future. The first thing that we notice is that it is one of the Minor Arcana cards. The past and present were both Major Arcanas. The Minor Arcana cards are less sure. They are more variable, less fixed."

"This is the Four of Wands. The Wands are the suit that represents fire, which typically stands for the experience of energy, action, optimism, creative impulse, adventure and beginnings."

The card itself had a bright yellow background with a castle type structure. The foreground showed four sticks with grape vines stung between them and behind the open stick building there seemed to be people celebrating.

"This is a positive card. It speaks of hard work and of people working together for a unified purpose. There is joy, openness and sharing. The hard work pays off and things are in harmony."

Jono listened carefully to Marie-Ange as he inspected his last card. It looked like a party, albeit an ancient one. He was a little skeptical of how his future would be party-like but he thought it was appropriate that wands were for fire. (Though... wands... fire... how they were connected didn't really make any sense to him.)

He liked it was a positive card too. Jono believed his future was better off now than it had ever been, but seeing it in a card spread made him feel strangely better about thinking it.

Overall, it was an interesting card reading that ultimately didn't tell him much, but it had been a fun little thing to do with a nice girl. Jono looked at the cards again and then up at Marie-Ange. His eyes crinkled in a smile. *Thank yeh. That was pretty wicked.*

He nodded at her deck. *Yeh only have th' one set?*

"De rien," Marie-Ange said as she started gathering the cards up and putting them back in their proper order. "Oui. I found this one many years ago. Tarot decks can only be given or found. If you buy them for yourself they do not work properly."

She shrugged. "I have not seen the need for another one yet. This one found me so it was a gift from God. Who would need anything else?"

It was hard to argue one might need more in life than a gift from God, so Jono was quiet.

If I were meant to have another, then someone would get it for me whether or not I asked," she said with a smile. If you weren't a collector but a real reader like Miss Colbert, Jono could see the logic in just having the one set. It made things easier, probably.

It felt quite nice to sit and be with Marie-Ange. She wasn't pushy or loud like some girls, and she was easy to talk to. And her accent was familiar, if not homey. Still, Jono couldn't think of anything else to say. This was probably the longest conversation he'd had with a girl in his entire life.

*Ehm. I oughtter go do me Spanish 'omework. Verb conjugatin' 'n all. Twas nice t' meet yeh, Marie-Ange.*

And he got up and nodded a little, and went back to his room.
