"Here," Clint said, shoving a block of knives at the first person who came into the kitchen. "Do me a favor and throw these at me, okay?"

His blue eyes were wide and just a little crazy.

"I-" Petra momentarily juggled the block of knives and pan of brownies she'd hoped to bake in the college kitchen before setting both on the counter.

"No, no I don't think so," she finally said, giving Clint a look. Had he gone crazy? Crazier? "Um. Why? Are you okay?" Petra followed up, obviously very concerned.

"What? Oh, yeah. Just testing something." He took a step back, spreading his arms. "Come on, try one."

Petra shook her head. "Nope, no can do, sorry. I'd be happy to pitch rocks at you all day, but not knives," she argued, pushing the knife block further away.

"What are you testing? Can we test it without knives?" she asked, moving to the oven and setting the temperature. "I don't even know how to throw a knife. I'd probably miss."

"Don't know how to-- Right, I'm going to add that to the list of things I'm going to teach you," Clint said grimly, leaning over her tray and sniffing curiously. "What's this?"

"It will be brownies, eventually," she told him, glancing at the oven to make sure it was the right temperature before putting the pan in. "Very chocolatey brownies. Like, I don't know if they'll be cutable, there's so much chocolate. They didn't work in the toaster oven and I NEED them. So here I am!"

Petra needlessly dusted off her hands on her jeans then folded her arms across her chest, giving Clint the best 'mom glare' she could.

"Now. What's going on? Please tell me you don't normally ask random people to knife you?"

"Usually not random people, no. Though with the way my luck has been going, you should've been Brian. Hey, can I have a super-chocolate brownie when they're done?"

Petra snorted. "Sure, of course. As long as you leave me half the pan, you can have as many as you want." She gave him an intensely scrutinizing look.

"And you're avoiding my questions. Are. You. Okay?"

Clint shot her a wry smile. "Yeah. I think my powers are malfunctioning, but I'm pretty much okay."

She looked relieved for a minute until what he said registered completely.

"Clint! You wanted to test them with KNIVES?" Petra threw her hands up in the air, looking at the ceiling as she spoke. "God save me from the supposedly invulnerable men in my life, please?"

He rubbed the back of his neck. "It was a working theory!" he protested...pretty weakly.

Petra just shook her head as she began to open the drawers in the kitchen. "I don't suppose you all have anything like a deck of cards here, do you?" she asked as she continued to look for the inevitable junk drawer. "We can totally test your powers with those."

"No, but I can run up and get some." He paused at the kitchen door and offered her a quick, flashing grin. "Knives would've been cooler."

Rolling her eyes Petra just made a shooing motion with her hands. "We can do that later!" she called out after him. "After I'm sure I won't kill you by mistake!"

Clint was gone for a few minutes before returning with a stack of cards. He tossed them onto the counter before hopping up after them, casually sitting with his hands between his knees. "Just don't look too carefully at the backs."

In the time he'd been gone Petra managed to wash the dishes that had accumulated in the sink. It was only polite after all, she was using their oven.

Taking the deck, she raised her eyebrow at Clint's instructions, but did as she was told, barely glancing at the back of the cards. Petra shuffled the deck several times, only dropping the cards once. She was quite proud of that.

"Okay, so how would your luck usually work? If I look at a card, put it back in the deck and ask you to find that card, would that be a good test?"

"That'd be good. Or we could take turns randomly selecting cards and mine would beat yours nine out of ten times."

"Okeydokey," Petra replied happily, setting the shuffled cards on the table. She cut the deck, lifting up the top half to reveal her card. Jack of Diamonds. Not impossible to beat but the odds were against Clint.

He chose a card, flashing the Queen of Hearts at her.

Petra grinned and cut the deck again. "Bleh," she said, making a face and showing him the five of clubs. "That's easy to beat. Although I suppose, if you don't beat it, that'll tell us something."
