Vic
Noah knew that no one was ever summoned to the Captain's office on their birthday, so he had patiently gone through his daily routine as his eighteenth year arrived and his seventeenth departed. Two days later being patient was taking a lot more effort than he cared to admit. A good deal of that was directly his roommate's fault. A meticulous, compulsive neat freak Noah was finding it immensely difficult to survive Julio's tidiness deficiency. The urge to just clean it all for him had set an almost permanent tick in his right eye. But Julio would likely not feel at all comfortable with the arrangement, and Noah's counselor had told him mentorship - no matter how small - was looked upon well. It was not as if there were very many months left in the year that he could not endure it. It was best too, that he learn to cope with potentially hostile situations. He would likewise have a roommate once he was a cadet - there was no doubt in his mind he would not be asked, and no thought whatsoever of turning the invitation down - and it was in his best interest to learn to endure all personality types. Even if he did often miss his previous roommate. He had let Noah clean everything as often as he liked. It had been a very comfortable arrangement.

Because he could not clean the room any further without infringing upon Julio's personal expression, Noah had taken to cleaning the bathroom often. Thankfully, not everything had changed and their suitemates were accustomed to his need to keep everything orderly. Between their joint rooms, the heat was quite high and so the bathroom warmed quickly and easily to slightly uncomfortable temperatures. Thus, Noah was standing in the shower stall, scrubbing the tiles in nothing but a pair of swim trunks.

All the tiny tiles were comforting in their need for attention. They were also quite easily broken - as he had learned over time - and so were themselves also good training in strength distribution. He scrubbed the brush across the grout, pleased with the white shine.

Vic dropped his back pack on his bed, stripped off his jacket and his hoodie and made a bee-line for the bathroom, grateful to find the door wasn't locked. Of course, he wasn't lucky enough to find the room actually empty when he pushed the door open, and he cocked his head slightly at the sight of Noah, stripped down to swim trunks and scrubbing industriously at the shower tiles.

"Hey," he greeted him absently. "You realize you're going to scrub right through those tiles someday at this rate, right?" That was pretty much the extent of his interest in conversation until he'd taken a leak, though, and he by-passed the shower and Noah for the toilet.

Noah was used to people walking into the room while he was cleaning, so he didn't bother to look up. He knew before the other boy talked who it was, and he pulled the brush back to peer at the wall. "I'm not using a great deal of strength," he replied as he made sure none of the grout had been scrubbed clear. It had happened on occasion.

Vic didn't answer until he'd finished and flushed. He wasn't at all shy about using the john with Noah there, but there was a limit to his willingness to be social in the bathroom.

"It's not a strength thing, Noah," he pointed out cheerfully as he headed for the sink. "It's a wear and tear from all the cleaning thing."

He frowned slightly, stepping back to observe the wall. It bothered him that he may be forcing an early decay of their bathroom with clean intentions. On the other hand, the bathroom was the last place available for him to keep as neat as he felt compelled to. It was a horrible crossroads to suddenly find himself facing.

Vic finished washing his hands then sauntered over to stick his head in the shower. He gave Noah a quizzical look when he noticed him standing back staring at the wall.

"Not any time really soon, Noah," he assured him, quirking a faint smile. "And, hey, a clean bathroom is a beautiful thing, right?" Though possibly just a biiiit more beautiful to Noah than to most people. Vic sure wasn't about to complain about it always being spotless without him ever having to do any of the work, though.

Turning the water on, he pulled the shower head free and turned it to spray the wall he'd been cleaning. "I'll try to find more suitable cleansers," he assured him. Even if he had to make them himself. He'd always used only green, eco-friendly products. But even they could cause harm long term.

"I really don't think you need to worry about that so much." Vic felt a little bad for even saying anything now. Noah could be almost painfully literal. Not to mention earnest. "I was just teasing, it's not a big deal."

"All the same," he replied, turning the handle to cool the temperature. He'd put off the rest of the stall for the time being. "I can make something far preferable." Noah had always been good at making things. Complex calculations and breaking down compounds had been easy for him even as a child. It hadn't been any sort of social aid, but what was life for if not for expanding one's understanding? Social occasions just set up mental inhibitors most people couldn't afford in the first place.

Vic shrugged, still smiling slightly. "I guess if that gets your motor running," he conceded, leaning one shoulder against the wall just outside the shower. "New kid made a pig's breakfast of your room again?"

Noah couldn't help the frustrated sound as he raked a wet hand through his hair and turned off the water. "My half of the room remains suitable for habitation." He set the shower head back in its stand, very careful not to close his hand about it as he felt he might.

"And his half looks like the set for the tornado scene in the Wizard of Oz, huh?" He'd seen inside the room since Richter had moved in, after all, and he reached out absently to pat Noah on the shoulder in commiseration.

"Look on the bright side, at least you didn't get assigned him in September?" He grinned brightly. "And they couldn't stick you with him again next year even if they wanted to."

His half was suitable for organic occupation.

"Small mercies," he chimed. But he was right. Whether or not he ended up in the cadet program, Julio Richter would be someone else's cluttered compromise. It wasn't that he had any negative feelings toward the boy himself. In truth, Noah rarely had any sort of feelings toward anyone. But when it came to disrupting his habits, the boy had gone for gold.

He copied Vic's pat - social habits still eluded him most of the time, but this one seemed safe enough. "You have my sympathies."

Vic smiled at the pat. It was rare for Noah to initiate physical contact, after all, so it was a small triumph after a fashion. "That better not be because you think they'll stick me with him next year," he warned. "Because that'd be a cruel thing to wish on a guy." Vic wasn't a neat freak by any stretch of the imagination, but he did have certain minimum standards that Richter, from what he'd seen, didn't come even close to matching.

"Compatibility?" Vic gave Noah a mock-outraged look. "Are you implying I'm anywhere near enough of a slob to be compatible with him?"

"Hardly," he replied, stepping out of the shower. "However, your temperature requirements are on par. You have experience occupying a shared space." He gestured to the bathroom around them. "And your psychological and social inclinations make you an ideal candidate to take my place next year, as it stands." He wasn't after all, taking into account any incoming freshman. Whether by step or by enrollment.

Picking up a towel, he began to dry himself off. "At the very least, you're likely to maintain your current position."

Vic made room to let Noah out of the shower, and indulged in a moment's admiration as the older boy dried himself off. Just a moment, though. Ogling the presumably straight sort of suitemate was tacky, after all.

"That-" Vic shuddered melodramatically. "Is a horrible thought." And it kind of was, actually. He didn't really want to think what the bathroom might end up looking like without Noah's obsessive cleaning tendencies.

He folded up the towel, before dropping it in the hamper. "With a high plausibility rate."

"You suck." Vic stuck his tongue out at Noah - just a normal distance - and grimaced.

"You'll have one big advantage being a cadet-" Which he had no doubt Noah would be. "It's pretty much a guarantee that your room-mate can't be a complete slob, even if they want to." The inspections in the cadets' dorms were practically legendary, after all.

"Yes," he agreed, with an almost fanciful note. He was very much looking forward to it. "And the entire quarters are shared only by pairs." Not that Noah had any particular preference; numbers were in his favor however.

"Singles if you're lucky," he pointed out. Though he'd heard those were almost insanely hard to get, and were generally reserved for people whose powers made it difficult to share living s pace. "I'm totally going to come over and invade your clean space if they go and stick me with Richter next year, though," he teased. Not that he was sure Noah would get the tease, that sort of thing seemed to elude him at times.

"If my roommate finds it permissible, you are welcome to indulge in the shower." After all, Victor was the only one who did not leave hair in the drain. It would be unfair to expect him to endure a clogged shower when he did not contribute to it.

Yeah, he hadn't gotten the tease. Which was okay. Made Vic wonder how he was going to do as an agent someday, though, given his huge issues with reading people.

"Thanks for the thought, Noah." Vic smiled. "But I think I'll manage. It's probably easier to keep my own shower sanitary enough to use than to troop across campus to the college dorms."

It didn't much concern Noah. He could be objective and he could be blunt. Compassion could be his partner's job.

He nodded. "I'll discuss it with him anyway when the time comes and let you know."
